Nervous new owner question....ticking normal?

Postby pilotgeg » Thu Jan 28, 2010 8:05 am

Maybe I'm just a paranoid nervous new owner, but I've never had a newer (after 1995ish) car that ticks as much as my 2006 Pathfinder does. What I mean is, when I shut off the engine, it continues to tick for a few minutes. Multiple random ticks from under the car. Today, I heard it while I was at a drive through with the truck running.

Is this normal and can I relax a little? :?:

ya know. i noticed that too recently on my 06 path, which i also recently purchased. i've noticed it on cars throughout the years & haven't paid too much attention to it. i think it's pretty normal, but i'll wait for others to chime in with a better answer.

I got my 08 Path a few months back and heard the ticking/ping after turning engine off which i thought was just normal exhaust cool off. Then heard it while engine was running and decided to stop by the dealer. The guy tells me its just the heat shield and its normal nothing to worry about. Still think my basically new truck should not be making noises while running.

normal noise. it's the exhaust cooling after engine is turned off and when it's warming up also.

Nissans are infamous for this. My Sentra used to sound like a popcorn machine for a good 5 minutes after shut down. They basically wrap the exhaust from the header to the tail pipe in a spot welded, or clamped, clam-shell of exhaust shielding. Think of it like a house radiator that creaks and pops as the heat comes on. Same thing, and nothing to worry about.

Same here. My parents had two '97 Maxima's that sounded like this so I didn't think anything of it with the Pathfinder.

the stock exhaust is very limiting and restricting proper airflow, and hence it heats up and starts ticking. its very normal.

if it bothers ya all that much, might wanna consider an exhaust upgrade.
the 4.0 is a beast with an air intake and straight flow exhaust.

on mine, only the air intake K&N, and got 308hp out of it.
waiting for warranty to expire to really get into modifying it.

got a buddy that did the K&N with Fox exhaust and headers on the 08SE, measured 350hp on the wheel.
