Oil catch cans catch the oil that comes with the air that is being vented from the crankcase via the PCV system, rather than have it go back to the intake where it will coat the inside of the intake system and intake valves. On direct injection engines, this is a benefit because it helps keep the oil from caking-up on the top of the valve, whereas in a port-injected or carbureted engine, the gas and air are mixed before the valve and the gasoline will help clean the top of the valve.
I've never seen one used on a stock Pathfinder, but I have seen them used on some performance-modified Z-cars.

I have one on my 2013 Mustang the issue with the 5.0 V8 is the excess oil that gets burned with the fuel lowere the Octain and can cause "Ping" I added a catch can when I installed a 93 Octain tune.

You see it a lot on forced-induction engines, especially those with intercoolers. The catch can will keep the oil out of it.

How much oil are you seeing in yours? I've been on the fence about it and have just been plain lazy. I had one on my GTO as the LS2 has some issues with this type of thing :)

Thanks
