What I would do is cut the harness of the old sensor near the sensor, itself, and tie the old sensor harness to the new sensor harness, near the connector, and use that to pull up the new sensor's harness "through the mess," as you describe. Some basic idea, more or less, but works in case you don't have a string handy.
