How much larger of a tire on factory rims?

Postby ibfurloughed » Fri Jan 29, 2010 7:22 pm

It's time for tire and I would like to put wider but not taller tires on my 2008 Pathfinder. It's a 2008 V-6 2 wheel drive SE with 17 inch rims. The factory tire size is 265/65 17. Does anyone know how many inches wide the rims are? Or how wide a tire I can put on the truck before I have any clearance issues in the wheel well. The truck is not driven of road so I'm talking about street tires.

Thanks
ib

Tire B: 285/60 R 17
(30 x 11.22 x 17) 0.79" wider than the 265-65-17, and 0.31" less in overall circumference, nothing to worry about there. so there ya go.

Looked online at tirerack and they don't appear even have a tire in that size. I guess I'll get a set of 275/60 r17 for it.

if you go with 275-60-17 you will be into a smaller overall diameter tire by -1.79 inches, and only 0.39 inches fatter. so I would not recommend this move, step up to the 275-65-17 tire like I did and get 0.39 inches fatter and +1.61 inches overall diameter larger, taken from the center of wheel the tire will be approx 0.75 inches larger around, I like this look on my Pathy. and yes it looks great.

Kev -

Not trying to pick nits, but you might re-check your numbers. According to www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html, that size is 0.20 inches wider (sidewall to sidewall), 0.50 inches greater in diameter (tread to tread across the center of the tire) and 1.60 inches greater in circumference (the distance all the way around the tread). The speedo will read 1.7% slow.

Manually calculated, circumference equals "pi" (3.14) times diameter.

So did I. I also did the longhand math to make sure. Maybe you misread something, or the online calculator is flawed, because the numbers you mentioned don't compute.

Just trying to be helpful . . . :)

I used the "spec" section of each tire description on tirerack.com and it doesn't aggree with you number either. They do however agree with Silvers numbers. Thanks for the input. I'm not having much luck finding 285/60 r17 so I think I might just go with 275/60 R17 They are only 1/2" inch lower in total height so the truck will only be 1/4" lower. They are 3/4" wider.

You could go with a 295/60r17 Diameter is 30.94" and section with is 11.69" its alot wider than stock but gives you the same hight. your just going to have to trim the fenders for turning.

Guys, really don't understand what are you talking about, everything is here, on site - try to search threads.

On our Pathys you can install easily (if you want bigger tires) following sizes:
265/70-17
275/65-17
275/70-17
285/65-17 (depends on tire, but better to fit if lifted)
285/70-17 (for lifted cars, fender cutting required)
295/60-17
295/65-17 (for lifted cars)
275/65-18 (for lifted cars)
275/70-18 (for lifted cars, fender cutting required)

This is a real life experience. Also, need to say that tires wider than 285 are useless unless you going in sands usually.

yarilo,

Thanks, I don't see a 275/60 R17 listed in your possiblities will they not work for some reason?

Also you list a 295/60 R17 Will that wide of a tire fit on the factory rims without excessive crowning. Your list doesn't mention triming the fender wells for this size either.

Hello!

Yes, 275/60-17 will fit w/o problems on regular rims, it means 7'' is enough. If you want to go up to 295 you need 8'' wide as minimum.

Simple table looks like (on-road use):
<275 - 7''
285 - 7,5''
295 - 8''

this is allowed minimum wide you can use w/o problems, in case you're preparing your car for off-road you need to add ,5'' additionally, especially if you need to deflate your tires!

Off-road use:
<275 - 7,5''
285 - 8''
295 - 8,5''

Honestly, I don't think you need bigger tires, even if you install Calmini and it's possible to fit 305 I think 285 is enough and will not load car transmission and other parts excessively. Better to install taller tires than wider.
