REAR AXLE OIL, CHANGED AND WOW! GLAD I DID IT.

Postby KEVSTER » Sun May 30, 2010 6:18 pm

Ok, I changed the rear axle gear oil today, My 08 Pathy has 13,500 miles, and I could not believe how black and nasty the oil was.. I like the magnet on the drain plug.. anyhow,, the magnet had this goo lots of goo on it looked like assembly lube, no lrg pieces of metal.. so I drained and refilled with Mobil 1 Synthetic 75w-90wt and the axle almost took a full 2 qts. Then I changed the engine motor oil and filter.. So for those who have around 15k on up if you have not changed the rear axle gear oil, you might want too.

are you sure the "goo" wasn't very fine metal shavings? That's what you'd typically see on the magnet

There was evidence of very very fine silver like dust but this stuff was like black smooth goo. almost like assembly lube, lots of it, more than usual.. I know nothing is wrong with the axle, what I found is normal but it is a great feeling to know that it was flushed out and fresh oil put in.

Gear oil is same color as clean motor oil,out of the bottle. Unless a person uses Royal Purple.

That's what I found when I changed mine @15k. The black goo is still metal, just very small and mixed with gear oil. There was much less when I changed it @ 30k. I think I'm going to keep the rear diff on a 15k schedule as it is so easy to do and we do a bit of towing.
