The frame is the black thing to the left. The cat is the silver thing to the right. Notice the discoloration, obviously from excessive heat, on the frame. Could this mean my cat is bad? Has anyone ever seen this?

It looks like there is a drop of oil on the catalytic converter flange. I'd be concerned about an oil leak near the cat. In fact that may be part of your problem if oil is dripping onto the cat and burning.

in my industry we call this a thermal event waiting to happen. Definitely get it looked at ASAP.

To me, it almost looks like rubbing (physical contact). But yeah, the oil on cat is not looking good at all.

the oil is just pb blaster that i sprayed on the bolts on the flange as I am planning on changing the cat.
