Spark plugs are due every 105,000 miles on this engine. They use NGK Laser Platinums #6240 (that's the stock #, plug # is PLFR5A-11) from the factory and while they may be a little expensive (Advance Auto Parts sells them for about $10/plug), I highly suggest you stick with them. As far as the front oxygen sensors, they can lose efficiency over time. Normally, they will cause the "MIL" to turn on if they are bad, but if they are working in a limited range, they may not. One would really need to view the datastream on a scantool to verify their proper operation. If you are going to replace them, avoid the "universal fit" O2 sensors that make you splice them into the original harness. NTK, Denso and Bosch O2 sensors are all pretty good. Nissan trucks and especially Pathfinders were never really known for good fuel mileage. Combined fuel mileage is rated at 15 mpg. Spraying the MAS hotwire with mass air sensor cleaner or electrical cleaner to clean it may help make it more efficient. Synthetic driveline fluids may help a little, along with proper maintenance. You never posted what fuel mileage you are getting, so it's hard to tell if it's bad or "normal" for that vehicle.

Sorry, but that does not tell us a lot. We have no idea how much fuel was required to fill it up for the distance traveled.

I find that the on-board mpg (US) readout [2005-up]is rather close to exact. So you might try resetting that at time of fill-up and see what it says after a given distance, perhaps leaving it on that setting most of the time. I know it helps me to maximize my fuel usage if I watch how I drive closely.

How about for a 99.5 Pathfinder?

Postby ak23 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 2:47 pm

Hi not trying to jack your thread but I am concerned over my gas mileage.
I fill my pathfinder with high octane fuel from Shell and I get about 5-6 km per liter or 360km for the tank.
I have just changed the spark plugs to ngk iridium and have changed the fuel filter has gotten 40 more km from the change nothing very significance.
Why am I getting such a shitty mileage??

The VG33E engine will not advance timing to take advantage of the higher octane fuel. Use regular 87 octane. You're wasting your money with premium in these engines, unless you have a VQ35DE which is more liberal with ignition timing.

I have the 2012 6 cyl and I got over the last 3 fill ups, 14.7 and 11.4 L /100 KM.

The first one was all city driving and the 2nd was a bit of city and alot of country roads. One thing I watch is the RPM and try to maintain under 2000 RPM. I did that with my Altima and saw a big difference.

fuel mileage

Postby hurt70 » Wed Jul 04, 2012 7:02 pm

Hey folks !!! Just joined forum today !! Bought a '99 Pathy last week with only 161000 kms on it. Drove it from full to when gas light came on. At that point had driven 454 kms. Drove it to work (54 kms). When I filled it up I put in 68 litres. That leaves me with 12 litres in reserve. Did 508 kms on 68 litres of fuel. That's 13.38L/100 kms or 17.5 mpg. I have to say that is pretty good for a 13 year old truck.

Yeah, that's pretty good on a 99. It's what I get on my 06 Pathy which has a 5 Spd. AT. A lot of it's how you drive. The problem with the pre-2001 Pathys is that the VG33E wasn't much on the power, so some tend to justify pushing down on the accelerator to compensate, which, of course, drops the fuel mileage. A light right foot is the best this for fuel mileage!

I'm up to 19.2mpg I mostly drive on the highway but when driving in the city it goes down. I have a P4030 MIL code and will be getting a new Cat soon.

fuel milage

Well folks...I've had my '99 Pathy for almost a month. I do A Lot of driving. I've put on close to 4500 kms since I got it. And planning a drive to Temagami Ontario (just north of North Bay),six hours from Burlington. I've been monitoring my fuel consumption and I have to say I'm quite satisfied with what I'm getting. I've decided to try running mid-grade gas and I had an excellent result. I am now getting 18 - 21 mpg , mostly hwy. I rarely let the tank go below a 1/4 tank so I'm usually putting in about 55 to 65 litres it's a lttle easier to swallow when paying upwards of $1.38 a litre. But I'm not complaining. I am totally hooked on this truck and it will likely be replaced one day with another Pathfinder.

2004 Fuel Economy

Postby PathyConvert » Fri Aug 31, 2012 9:49 am

Hi guys,

Just thought I'd drop in my fuel economy numbers from a recent all day trip.

Filled up my '04 Pathy before the trip and then travelled 534 Km (331 mi) round trip and filled up when I got home.

So, I got 534 Km (331 mi) on 65.3L (17.2 US Gal.) using 91 octane fuel from Shell (0 ethanol).

90% of the trip was highway driving, doing about 120 Km/hr (74-75 mph), and with 2 people in the Pathy for 70% of the time and 3 people for the other 30% of the time. No other luggage. A/C was on for most of the trip.

So for that trip I used 12.23/100 Km (17.25 mpg). Crossed the 100,000 Km (62137.1 mi) mark on the way home. Still a pretty low odometer reading for an '04!

Engine had to be completely re-built at 86,000 Km though because of the dreaded power valve issue I had which destroyed the engine and cat converters. I had a whole long thread about it on here last year.

Cheers!

I've had good results with 89 Octane as well, especially highway driving.
