2005 Pathfinder Check Engine Code P0340 *NOW P0011*

Postby StaticFilter » Fri Feb 10, 2012 5:03 pm

My wife's Pathfinder just started dying while driving and threw a CEL P0340 code which is Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit. I read one other thread on this and it said a replacement of the sensor fixed the issue just fine. Is there any guarantee that if i buy a new sensor it will fix the issue? I'm strapped for cash :(

Guarantee? Of course not! Will it fix the problem? Probably. If you want guarantees, one needs to do the diagnostic procedure as outlined in the FSM for a DTC P0340 and isolate the cause. There are a number of potential causes for a P0340 code. That said, Nissan has had a lot of problems with cam and crank sensors for the last dozen years, so the chances that the sensor has failed are pretty good. That said, there are two cam (phase) sensors...one on each engine bank. P0340 is for Bank #1, which is the right bank. According to ALLDATA, it's Nissan #23731-6J90B.

Took off the intake and changed the damn camshaft position sensor in the right (passenger) bank, cleared the codes and drove it awhile, seemed fine. Wife just called and said the Service Engine Soon light just came on. DAMNIT. So What NOW? Now that I wasted $60 and several hours

I would check the code and make sure it's still got the P0340 code and not a code for something else.

Okay so it's a NEW code. P0011 Cam Position Actuator A Bank Timing Over Advance

WTF? I cleared the code, we'll see if it comes back.

Anyone have Ideas? She hasn't had any issues with it dying since i changed the cam sensor, just the SES Light and MAYBE rough idle (I don't drive it so i'm going off of what my wife says...)

Any ideas? I don't think it has rough idle but the SES light is still on. No issues with dying anymore though. Maybe an engine Oil FLUSH and clear the code again?

If you disconnected the battery at any time, the Idle Air Volume will usually need to be relearned or rough and/or erratic idle can occur; this is easiest done with a scantool capable of this function. Another cause of vibration in these vehicles at idle is the motor mounts; there is a TSB on the issue.

Diagnosing the P0011 trouble is difficult without a capable scantool (ie Nissan Consult II, X431 scantool, Snap-On Tools Modis) and following the FSM diagnostic procedure for the code. This TSB was issued pertaining to this code:

Reference: NTB06-079a

Date: January 24, 2008

DTC FOR VARIABLE VALVE TIMING CONTROL FUNCTION

This bulletin has been amended. The Applied Vehicles section has been expanded. No other changes have been made. Please discard any other copies.
APPLIED VEHICLES:
All 1996 - 2009 with Variable Valve Timing

APPLIED ENGINES:
VQ35; QR25; QG1B; GA16; VQ40; VK56; MR18; MR20

IF YOU CONFIRM:

The MIL is on with any of the following DTCs stored:
^ P0011, P0014, P0021, P0024, P1110, P1135,

NOTE: The engine may also have Camshaft Sprocket rattle noise and/or other engine noise.

ACTION

Do Not replace the variable valve timing Solenoid Valve or the Sprocket(s) without performing the complete diagnostics indicated in the EC section of the Service Manual.

The first steps in the complete diagnostic are to make sure the:
^ Engine oil is at the operating level; add oil if needed. Refer to the Service Manual for low oil level diagnoses if needed.

^ Oil pressure is normal when measured with a gauge at the pressure switch port. Refer to the Service Manual for low oil pressure diagnoses if needed.

Bump for a 2 year old thread.....

The EXACT same thing happened to me. I had the P0340, then I replaced the sensor and it starts MUCH easier, runs better, sounds better....

And now I have the P0011 :?

I'm HOPING that the ECU just needs to re-learn how to adjust the timing now that it actually knows what the camshaft is doing?

Nope. Severe hesitation under load when the RPM's are around 2k. Gets worse as it warms up.

Really hoping it's the sensor I got from NAPA as these symptoms didn't occur w/ the original.

Part from dealer is $116.93. Prob gonna head there soon.

Update: Think the OEM sensor did the trick :)

Best part? After a little practice it only took me 4 minutes to change the sensor... again. 8)

can you put the old one back in to see if the P00011 goes away?

Yup, I did that. I put the original sensor back in and the p0011 code and 2k rpm stumble disappeared... went back to the p034 and illuminated "VDC Off" and "SLIP" lights.
