changing r51 oil pump questions

I cant seem to find much info on this topic. Im sure someone out there has done it. Im looking for just basic procedure and tips, i have most of the front torn off i still have the a/c and power steering pump attached. I would appreciate any advice, thanks in advance

Nobody here has done this job, yet. Did you get your pressure checked before teardown? (Sorry for the dumb question, but the oil pressure gauges are definitely an issue, have had many reports of this).

no i didnt have the pressure checked but upon cold startup there is a nasty gear grinding/rattle coming from that area. I had multiple mechanics listen to it and all had the same bad news....oil pump. It does have 210k so ill just do all the other "fun" maintenance while im in there.

Wow that's a lot of miles for an R51. First one I've heard with over 200k. What year is yours?

05 LE, its been an amazing vehicle! Ive always done regular maintenance and its had amsoil its whole life, I go between 10-15k between oil changes and the dipstick will still read full. I have broke things on it (rear end) but its always do to abuse and I have beat the hell out of it. By far the best vehicle Ive ever owned!!

this is probably a good time to replace the timing chain tensioner slippers/chains :wink:
(are you sure they're not the cause of the noise you hear?)

that is the plan to replace everything. And Im pretty sure its not the timing chain/tensioners because it only does it after it has had a chance for the oil to settle and it only does it on startup......but i could be wrong :D but either way while im in there ill just change it all

please be sure to let us know the conditions of the components, especially the tensioner shoes
maybe you could post pictures of the old and the new shoes for comparison?

will do but keep in mind the tensioners have been replaced once already along with the water pump around 120k. i had someone else do the work for me last time

did it get the new type/updated tensioner shoes the last time around?

well, if they're the new type, they're probably not very worn
but if they're the old type, it would be interesting to see how much they are worn after the 90k miles they've been in service

so after some research and checking around I found a 28k engine for $2500 complete so that is the direction im going. Then i will rebuild my current one whenever i have time. Thanks everyone for your help
