"Clunk" and then limp mode

Postby sleeper » Sun Dec 26, 2010 2:48 pm

Hey guys. When driving my car, I was leaving a parking lot with my foot on the brake, going about 5mph. I heard and felt a very small "clunk" then the "Service Engine Soon" light came on, and then the car seemed to be in limp mode. Pressing the gas would barely move the car and it would almost seem like the e-brake is on. All gears would have the same effect. Turning the car off and on fixes the limp mode problem, but after about 5 min, it'll do the same thing. It's happened about 5 times now and it seems to only happen when I'm braking. I don't want to drive it any longer. Car is a 2005 Path SE with 81k. I have a new IPDM and have done the tranny fluid by-pass. Any ideas? thanks.

Clunk sounds bad... Does the engine rev when you press the accelerator?

I had something similar happen once, but stopping the engine and restarting worked. Remember that the accelerator is drive by wire, if the engine is not responding maybe the pedal assembly is bad?

thanks for the input. the engine does rev. i've taken it to about 3k rpm and it would barely move. Did your problem only happen once?

Yes only once. My problem was more electrical, yours is sounded more mechanical in nature.

Check your transmission fluid, make sure its not low. Can you take it back to where the transmission was done?

If your mechanically inclined, crawl under and check the powertrain connections to ensure nothing is broken/disconnected.

Can you rev the engine in neutral?

i'll check the transmission fluid soon as I get a chance. Tranny fluid was done about 10k miles ago and exact fluid level was replaced. Engine revs in neutral and the funny thing is that when thrown into reverse, it runs fine with normal acceleration.

tranny fluid was fine. As far as the "service engine soon" goes, i'm in the process of borrowing a code reader from a friend.

Found a couple posts on other forums as nobody has ever reported it here. Note that the Xterra, Frontier, and Titan share the same transmission as the Pathfinder, so you can check those forums for transmission and other types of issues.

My summary is that you should start with changing you trans fluid right away. Worked for the guy in the last post above. Check for fluid quality, and cross contamination.

If it is the solenoid, it sounds expensive.

Check tranny fluid quality and level. If it happens after verifying that, I would get the solenoid mentioned in the links I posted.

I did see one posting where the guy changed his solenoid himself. But it is deep in the trans.

I would try to find a reputable independant transmission shop and see if they would do it for straight time instead of book time...

Just got the truck back with new transmission fluid. Was driving well for a few miles then did it again :(
