EMS light, showing CAT fault Engine rattle between 2-3000rpm

Postby M6C DAZ » Sat Jan 24, 2015 3:51 am

Hey guys new to the forum, only had my '05 v6 path for 3 weeks!

EMS light came on so took it to get diagnosed, I had already noticed a change in Sound but wasn't too sure since I havnt owned the car long enough to think too much into it.

Turns out it had 2 faults showing up for the CAT. The guy cleared the faults on the computer and told me to drive over the weekend and see how it goes, I'm not too sure on this as it's getting close to the end of month where they are liable and I'm worried the garage are going to leave me to deal with this on my own.

The sound is a rattle between 2-3000 revs and doesn't sound healthy at all.

Anyone think they know what the problem is, need to act fast so the used car dealer pays the bill!

Thanks guys.

A rattle could be due to a lot of things, including the insides of the converters breaking down or a heat shield rattling, among other things. Most of the time catalyst efficiency codes trigger, it's because the converter is inefficient based on the inputs from the front and rear oxygen sensors and the catalytic converter(s) need to be replaced. Make sure you receive documentation from the used car dealer for the work that they do, including erasing the codes; this will serve as evidence that the problem existed prior to the end of the warranty in case you need to take legal action. You could get a second opinion from another shop or dealer if you don't trust your used car dealer's integrity. A diagnostic charge you'll have to pay at another shop is a lot cheaper than what it would cost for you to have the catalytic converters replaced.

Thank you I feel a little more informed and confident now for when I go back to them during the week because after the fault was erased... surprise surprise on my way home the EMS light came back on again.

Thanks again for your response, much appreciated :)
