engine is making a ringing sound

everytime I put the car into D and start driving around 2000 rpm it start ringing pretty bad especially when its is going up hill. My friend told me its the timing belt but he always told me that I don't have to ever have to change it because its metal. Can someone please reply back asap thank you

Hard to figure out what you mean by ringing, whether engine, heat shield or otherwise. As for the timing belt, if it has skipped a tooth, it can make a bit of a tinging noise only under acceleration. If its the 3.3L its definitely a rubber belt and does need to be changed eventually. The 3.5 I'm not sure what year was the switch over but I believe they are rubber as well, but I will double check.
