Now I'm getting the same issue

Postby Cliff_Jumper » Wed Aug 19, 2009 1:38 pm

I'm resurecting this thread because I'm having the same problem.

My PF is an 05 SE with 51K on the odometer. I noticed when I filled up and it's only showing 3/4. Then the next day, "Service Engine Soon" light turned on.

Is there a TSB for this issue or a step-by-step how to fix? I really don't want to bring it to the stealership and spend $$ if I can do it myself properly.

Had the same problem in my 07 SE at about 37k. Took it in and with a little prodding I got the dealer to cover it under warranty. It was the fuel level sending unit.

I havent experienced anything like this on the Pathfinder, but my Patrol is a different story.
The GU Patrol has 2 tanks, the main gauge was constantly showing full, as was the sub. The sub tank empties via a pump into the main tank thru a series of logic and controls. Evidently, the truck ran out of fuel on one occaision, the sub being full would not transfer fuel over as the main tank indicator was also showing full (Over filling prevention logic).

Took it to the stealership who after doing a 'complete diagnostics' on the system concluded that the fuel sender unit in the tank and the complete gauge cluster in the dash require replacing (i.e.US$1500 parts only), "yeah Right!!!!". The truck by the way has done almost 200K Km and has done extensive off-roading mainly dune riding (abused slightly). After reading many threads on Patrol forums, it seems that Nissan have left alot to be desired for in the electrical earthing system. I beefed up the earthing system but nothing changed. I eventually changed the sender unit and is all working just fine (US$ 85 in parts). Am a happy man.

The sender units on the GU Patrol and the Maxima from what I am aware have a tendency to go erratic, maybe the pathy is similar

wonder if anyone has started a petition against Nissan for this fault. As the 2005/2006 models get higher mileage, it looks like they all start to fail around 50k miles.

Mine was around 52k and I now have 66k. I'm beginning to get a bit tired of the "Engine Service" light being on all the time and the fuel gauge being empty, so I might have to order up some parts and get it swapped out.

Do you really have to drop the driveshaft?

Maybe someone can write up a How-To with some pictures.

I did this repair on my Pathy myself, it took about 2.5 hrs and part # 25060-ZS00A (Fuel level sending unit) and part # 17342-EA000 (Packing). Here's the link I followed: http://www.clubfrontier.org/forums/f23/ ... ndex2.html
Hardest part was resting the gas tank on the jack but the piece of plywood along with running the tank low helped. No more check engine light and proper gauge reading. Hope this helps

My first and last Nissan

Postby Cliff_Jumper » Thu Oct 15, 2009 5:52 am

Just an update on this issue. Nissan finally gave me a call as I complain to them about this issue and request for "good will" to pay for the expenses.

Guess what's their answer, "Unfortunately, it's not covered under the powertrain warranty." This really upsets me as I'm spending $$ to fix a practically almost new vehicle (50K miles). This put Nissan below the list of worst vehicles in my book. :x

So for now I ordered the parts at Courtesy and found a reliable shop to replace the bad unit.

Ok guys i wanna know what you guys think,,

I do not have any inaccurate gauge readings, my fuel needle doesnt jump from empty to half full or anything like that, but when i go to the pump, the maximum i have ever put in the tank with the needle showing a little above empty with the low fuel light on was 11.5 -12 gallons!!

Mine is an 08SE GCC spec and we too in the gulf get the 80 litre (21.sumthing gallon) fuel tank..So wheres the rest of the fuel gone..??

Its like the needle keeps showing less fuel compared to the actual fuel in the tank..Ok for argument sake say theres 5 gallons for reserve,, the gauge should show me atleast another 5 gallons worth of fuel still in the tank..

So i can roughly do around 310 km for about 11 gallons,,the most i have ever done is 385 km on one tank of gas (this was a 400km road trip) and when i hit the pump,,only 12gallons worth of gas to fill up again..
Ive already reported this and they said there was nothing wrong, but am gonna ask them again when i go in for the 30k service..

Do you guys think i have a bad fuel sending unit??

I have similar issues on my 05 SE... by the time the gauge is reading next to empty and the DTE is reading 0km, I've only gone about 450km and my fillup is around 65L. That means another 15 liters is swimming around in the tank, that's not even close to empty. Its another 100km of driving easily.

because i was asked via PM;

jack up truck (left rear)
remove left rear wheel
disconnect 3 lines to tank (10mm clamp, quick connect and vent-line)
support tank and remove 3 17mm bolts securing tank straps
SLIGHTLY lower tank
disconnect one fuel line and one electrical connection from top of tank
lower tank
Remove lock ring
remove pump/sender assembly
replace sender
put it all back with NEW o-ring

My 2005 Pathfinder check engine light came on at about 80k miles and DTE of 20 miles. The code was the fuel level sender. After a refill and several starts, the check engine light went off only to reappear a few times later and the DTE flashed ---- but then later showed mileage again.

Last night after a fill up the gauge only showed 3/4 of a tank. This morning, my battery was dead so I had to jump it off. The gauge shows empty (still a full tank) and the DTE is ----.

Is this definitely a fuel level sender failure?

The guage sauga continues.
4 years ago the sending unit was replaced under warranty when it failed. Since then no problems. So I get the recall & my dealer says the sender needs to be replaced again with an updated unit. Had it replaced & ran out of gas with 1/4 tank showing on the guage. Back it goes to the dealer & another sender is installed. I fill the tank & the guage doesn't move, so I call the dealer. The service advisor tells me it may take up to a week for the guage to reset. I think that's BS but O.k. On the way home, I go over some rail road tracks & the guage pops to full.
This morning on the way to work, the guage hits 1/4, no low fuel light on & I run out of fuel. Furtunatly I have gas in a jug with me.
I call the dealer & they call me back. The factory says that some tanks flex & the float hangs up on the inside of the tank. So it goes in tomorrow again. This sounds like so much B.S. but we will see.
