oil filter too small

Postby Col R » Wed Feb 29, 2012 5:45 pm

Maybe I am a little anal about this but I look at the oil filter and find it to be very small for the size of the engine.

Has anyone identified a larger, maybe longer, filter that is the equivalent? One that would still come through the port in the skid plate.

I did this once on a previous car I owned. I found one that would fit the seal but had a much larger volume.

Am I stupid to worry or should I just change the filter more often?

I had a jeep once using mobile 1, I changed the filter every 3500 miles (and added about a qt) but changed the oil only every 7000 miles.

this is an awesome forum.

tell me the collective wisdom.

Rick

Nissan been using this filter since the mid-90's without any problems. I wouldn't be concerned about it.

There are many discussions around only changing filters every other change if the recommended interval is low (3k-5k by todays standards). A good quality filter will easily go 10k miles unless you have bigger issues. I've done oil samples to confirm so I have no intention of changing anything, particularly during any warranty period.

But if you're anal about something and might lose sleep, just do whatever makes you feel better and leave science out of it :P

Well the odd thing is that the filter for the VQ40 is the same as the filter for my 1.8L Honda Civic. I tend to share your thoughts on this, but I don't think there is much one can do about it, aside from setting up some kind of crazy inline filtration system. These do exist and I've seen ones that claim to extend drain intervals to over 100k.

Yeah, I don't think I would worry to much about the filter size. I actually do the opposite, replace the filter every 8,000 miles and the oil every 4,000

Interesting article on Blackstone Labs website. I've used them for oil analysis in the past on my Honda. Very insightful.

i seem to remember that at some point, years ago, the OEM VQ40 filter
being larger (taller?), and being concerned  about the change to the smaller one at that time

The "long" filter would be a 15208-9E000 (also, 15208-31U00). I believe this first showed up in the US on the 1998 Altima KA24DE. If i'm not mistaken, the "short" version of this filter is 15208-65F00, and is commonly used in applications where there is an oil cooler. It's really all the filter you need if you change your oil regularly. Still, they are a far cry from the big ol' filters that used to spin onto the old "L" and "NAPZ" engines!

I just use a good quality filter (Mobil 1) and full synthethic oil and change them both every 6k miles. I wouldn't worry about it too much. If your filter is collecting enough metal shavings and debris to clog up even a small filter, you've got bigger problems to worry about than a small filter.

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate the willingness to share information. I am a new PF owner and have many questions. Mostly I don't know the history of the vehicle and want to bring it up to spec so I do know.

always thought the same thing..a really small oil filter for this big V6.

Lots of different oil and filter change intervals on the forum...I just stick with changing oil and filter every 5k miles. Oil filters are inexpensive enough to change it every time..just my opinion

I had a jeep once, sold it at 160K. Commuted about 100 miles per day for many years. Used M1, changed the filter ever 3.5 K (added a qt) and the oil and filter every 7K.

Seemed to work. Today I rarely drive 3k a year and change oil more on seasons than miles.

I was able to find a larger filter for it. But the concensis here seems to be the original filter will be ok.

The article referenced before about bypass filtering is very informative. I like things to be as perfect as I can make them. A sometimes fatal flaw.

I think the bigger question is....does size matter? Seriously though, oil filter size has shrunk on almost every vehicle in the last ten years and I can't explain if that was just inefficiency on the older filters or something else. My guess is they've made the filtering medium better and/or figured out those big filters just weren't doing anything besides looking big. Size to size...I don't think this filter is out of line with everything else in the industry. Take it to the next extreme....we have a huge fleet of D11 dozers at my company with 32.1 liter V12's. That's pretty much 10x bigger and the oil filter is roughly 10x bigger as well. Used in just slightly more extreme conditions and changed at roughly 250 hour intervals or the equivalent of 30,000 miles of a car driven at redline.
