Re: Pathfinder in the Snow

There have been times when I've thought of selling my 2006 LE and getting something smaller and better on gas, such as a Rogue or Subaru Forester. Being that I work in Corrections, I have to report to work regardless of the weather conditions, so I need something that has 4WD or AWD. Then I get thinking about it and change my mind, one of the reasons being that it is so good in snow! Not that we get a lot of it where I live, but when we do, like this past Saturday in VA, it was nice to know that I would be getting home without an issue. The deepest snow I've seen here since I moved from NJ was 8". Unplowed side roads were no problem! Saturday morning saw 4" of snow accumulate in a little over 2-hours! Main roads that had recently been plowed were already covered over. Vehicles without 4WD shouldn't have even been out on the roads, but they were and were struggling bad to get traction. About 2 miles from my house on an unplowed side road, I came across a fellow officer from another institution sitting sideways in the road with his Honda Fit. I stopped for a while to see if he could get it straightened out and going again but it was apparent that it wasn't going to happen. When he tried to accelerate, he'd slide and get the front wheels over the edge of the road. If he got off the edge and back onto the road, he couldn't get any traction and would slide off again. I strapped him up and a tractor showed up and was nice enough to plow a section of the road to his driveway, about 1000' up the road. I ended up having to back my Pathfinder into the ditch on the opposite side of the road in order to get him where he could get finally get in a position to get up to the road. In low gear with the left side deep in a ditch and the right side on the edge of the road, I struggled for about 20-seconds before I was able to reverse my way back onto the road and then go home and get dry! This is the reason I'll be keeping my Pathy for at least a few more years!

I found in hilly curves w/ ice+ snow the car seemed to do even better than my 4x4 Xterra with similar AT mountain snowflake tires ( albeit the Xterra's tires are 2+yrs old vs these new ones on the R51)

But I also feel the "Auto" feature is at least in part responsible for this performance.

I have not yet done a scientific test ( not sure if thats possible) but it seems to me in some conditions (uphill curves on poor traction) my vehicle behaves better in Auto vs 4Hi.

Looks great, I had the opportunity to do a bit of snow and mud in mine as well. Not as much snow as what you had though, but fun nonetheless.
A few trucks couldn't get out of the parking area through the designated exit because of mud so they had to reverse out the way they came back in, I got out fine in awd mode. Is it just me or MTs on the R51 is real quiet? Maybe it's just my tires? The MTs I have on my D22 Frontier is loud, can't even tell on my R51.

1) I always look forward to the greatest possible snow storms in my Nissan SUVs.
2) Nissan FTW! (I think our Auto mode really kicks ass and rank it well above the typical open center AWD mode in competitors)
3) Hmmm, not sure.. perhaps the difference in wheelbase length creates different harmonics.. but that is pure speculation with no true basis in fact.

You're definitely on to something about the difference in wheelbase length because I know the same tires that my brother had on his Landcruiser(35" Geolandar M/T G003), my nephew with an 07 Tundra installed it on his when my brother upgraded to 37" Geolandar M/T G003s. The M/Ts are 10 times louder on his Tundra than when my brother had it on his Landcruiser. The nephew was accusing of my brother of selling him bad tires LOL Another brother with the FJ Cruiser has the same set of 33" Yokohama Geolandars and he said it's unlike what my nephew reported.

I was down in Glendale, AZ two weekends ago helping my nephew install his new suspension lift on his Tundra and using the impact wrench on his suspension hurt our ears so much we had to use ear protection the whole time. While using the impact wrench on my R51 and D22 were bearable without ear protection most of the time. I told my nephew that I believe his truck is what's amplifying the tire noise into the cabin, not the tires themselves based off using the impact wrench on his Tundra. I told him he can always look into sound deadening.

My D22 Frontier has 31" Dick Cepek Extreme Country and the R51 has 33" Maxxis Razr MTs.

I heard the gas V6 was super rare in Europe.
As in, just a few hundred examples exist.
Can you confirm?

Yes. 4.0 v6. super rare. Back in the days diesels were preferred, more torque, better fuel efficiency, cheaper to buy, cheaper to run. Due to emission regulations most old diesels (pre euro-4?) went up in roadtaxes and are not allowed into most inner cities. I couldn't drive one home (Amsterdam).

At the moment in europe 4 gas powered for sale https://www.autoscout24.nl/lst/nissan/p ... 05&atype=C
and 96 diesel powered https://www.autoscout24.nl/lst/nissan/p ... fc=2&qry=&
