2012 Timing Chain

Postby mball19 » Wed Mar 24, 2021 12:49 pm

I have a 2012 SV with 152,7xx miles on it. A couple of months ago it started making a ticking noise when I started it. I could hear it the first few minutes of driving and then it went away. I checked the oil monthly and it was never low. I just changed the oil and there were no metallic flakes in it. I’ve watched a couple of videos and it sounds like timing chain noise. Has anyone else had to replace the timing chains and guides on a 2012? Is there something else I should be looking at?

The VQ40DE upper timing change issues affected some 2005 through 2010 models and it causes a "whining" noise, not a ticking noise. Ticking noises can be caused by a number of things. An exhaust leak at or near the manifold can cause such a noise. There have been some reported cases or cracks in or around the flange area of the exhaust manifold...and a leaking exhaust gasket could also do this. A fuel injector can make a loud ticking noise. At start-up and especially in cold temperatures, "piston slap" can be something that can be noticeable...but is usually more of a tapping noise. Sometimes something as simple as a particular brand of oil filter can cause such noises to occur.

Thanks. I'll poke around the exhaust manifolds.
