This is what my V8s oil looked like at 5000 miles

I think this is absolutely amazing.
5000 miles of hard summer driving including high speed runs through hilly interstate at extra legal speeds at 100F external temperature, 170,000 miles on engine.
IMG_0559.JPG
it is clear to me this oil resisted oxidation extremely well.
Its Valvoline Maxlife Synthetic in 10w-30 (backed by a K&N HP1010 filter)

Why did it resist breakdown to well?
I think the fact that the multiviscosity spread is so small must have a lot to do with it as there must be few if any Viscosity index improvers in this formulation available to break down.
Keeping in mind that this is a high milage oil packed with extra detergents there is another thing this tells me:
The engine is internally speaky clean or the detergent package would have pulled more dirt out of the engine into the oil.

And finally this engine clearly has zero blowby and doesnt use a drop of oil (the oils position on dipstick a touch below "full" is the same after it was filled)

If this wasnt a Nissan engine one would have to suspect a recent engine replacement had taken place, right before I bought it 5 months ago.
But its the original engine.

Just goes to show how good Nissans really are.

I always get in a muck over oil(s)!

If the oil is dirty, it shouldn't necessarily mean anything, except that it is working? I thought this was the purpose of the detergents in modern oils. Perhaps the Max Life is formulated differently.

It would be very interesting if you sent your oil out for analysis and see what it indicated.

I think this would create a good baseline on how your engine is performing, oil change to oil change.

Come to think of it - you are making me think - I should do the same!
I mean, when I perform my changes, the oil is dirty as sin, but low like/new viscosity.

As a high milage oil maxlife is sure to be loaded with detergents.
but since it is still so clear I figure, after all those miles it shows my engine internals are quite clean.

Also clearly minimal oxidation has happened (which also darkens oil)

It certainly looks like a fantastic result.
I've seen a couple over the last few months (V8s) that look exceptionally clean up near where I am, but gas would be a hog to handle.

Love your updates. Makes me think I'm not alone in this world!

Thank you for the kind words.
Just did a run up to Baltimore from the Florida panhandle 1000 miles each way.
Got me to 7400 miles.

Changed the oil.
I know the combination of full synthetic 10w-30 Maxlife with a K&N filter almot certainly could have gone longer given how good the oil looked and how much a %age of the miles were pure highway.

But I couldnt help myself especially since I will park it soon with 3 weeks travel abroad strting.

I was going to put in the same oil (why fix whats clearly not broken right?) but they did not have the amount necessary in stock.

So I went with Mobil1 10w-30 High Milage .

This oil is one of the very few that meets ACEA A3 and is a 30 weight so I also am very happy with this choice.
Filter this time was Mobil 1 extended performance filter.
Not a cheap filter but that thing was heavy which makes me feel I got a lot of "filter stuff" for my money.

Yes I used to spend a lot of time there.
I still go there on occasion no oil goes into my car without me perusing the forums there first. :D
