Best rugged tire for ~2in lift with stock 18in V8 LE rims

Postby stugry » Wed Jul 01, 2020 6:56 pm

Like the title says. I'm in the middle of changing my 08 V8 LE to be a tiny bit more offroadable, while still maintaining decent roadability. It's our 3rd vehicle so I can have some fun with this but I have to tow a 20ft cattle trailer a few times a year so I can't go crazy. I'm looking to get about 2 to 2.5 inches of true suspension lift so I'd love some advice as to what springs/struts combos work best and what other odds and ends such as bushings should be addressed while in there. My main question at this point is what would be the best rugged tires that would fit the stock 18 LE wheels and fill in the fenders well with 2 to 2.5 inches of lift? I've looked for hours through this forum but the pictures don't show up(maybe too old of posts) so comparisons are tough. There's also very few people running the stock wheels once they go with larger tires. I'm just trying to save some coin so I'd prefer not getting new wheels. While I'm trying to save money, I'm also trying to do the suspension stuff right so that it'll be fully functional and reliable. Thanks for any input or advice. This place has been a huge benefit for all the little things I've already done to the pathy.

stock height 2008 V8 SE and I have been running the BFG KO2 275/65/18 for the past 5 years. they have been excellent in all conditions: sand, mud and snow.
If I lift the truck I would probably go with same tires in a bigger size.

Went with Road One Cavalry MT 285/65/18. Tiny bit of rubbing but nothing major and I haven't done the melt mod yet. The suspension is stock height.

I have a 2008 LE V8 and plan on 285/65/18 like Stugry posted.

Question: Would wheel spacers reduce rub or make it worse? I'm thinking of 1" or 1.5" wheel spacers. Thanks!

I suspect it may make it worse. You might be able to get away with an adjustable uca like a Mevotech or SPC and adjust your caster to push your wheels forward in the wheel well. The melt mod is the cheapest and most reasonable solution here though if it in fact is just the fender liner.

2011 LE v6 w/ stock 18s... 2" lift f/r...LT275/70/18.
That's roughly 33s, in backroad vernacular.

From Tire Recappers...Backwoods A/T... Tread pattern is very similar to KO2s.

Been great in mud, snow, slush, creek beds & beaches. Seen about 10k highway miles and besides humming a little, they're great. Averaging a little over 16mpg on the highway with almost 1000 lbs of people and cargo. I run them about 45psi cold on the road.

They look great!
So does your rig.
The pics are well done to display the lift/tire setup also.

45 psi though?
Since they are bigger than stock they have more load carryng capacity even at stock inflation levels.
I imagine you may have a roughride? :P

thanx for the kind words.
i think it looks better dimly lit or slightly blurry.
it's always dirty.

and the ride is really quite tame & comfortable.
i had similar concerns but it's not harsh at all.
very happy with these tires.

I was looking for rugged tire for weeks, but ended up with Cooper Discoverer AT3 Sport2, as this was thje only option IN EUROPE, which was certified for at least 170 km/h (110 mph). But if you live in US, then my strong and best suggestions are:
  1. Kenda Klever R/T KR601, best reviews all round tire
  2. Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek, my second best performer tire
Both are below US$ 180 per tire as per my reviews.
