It looks like the original radiator so I'll check the part number after I pick it up. I asked the tech about the SMOD and he said generally it was higher mileage trucks. I don't want to risk it though, so if it's the older SMOD-prone radiator I'll swap it out.

If you choose to do so, if you perform the bypass, the risk is eliminated.

You can either do the bypass or put in a new radiator.
Either will eliminate the threat to your (otherwise nearly bulletproof) transmission.

There is a school of thought ( to which I also belong) that considers radiator replacement the best practices solution over the bypass
But the other school of thought points out to a great many Pathfinders running on bypass, a nearly free solution, for 100 000 miles with no discernable ill effects.

If you're going to replace the radiator, you might as well replace the heater pipes on the firewall before they break!

I hadn't heard that the heater pipes were failure prone. Any other weak points I should look over? Is this already covered in a sticky or FAQ somewhere? Thanks everyone!

Edit: I know about the SMOD and timing chain as potential weaknesses on 05-~10 VQ40DE engines. I'm mostly concerned with things to be cognizant about...potential catastrophic failure points or things that will leave me stranded. I am aware that all vehicles will have wheel bearings fail, need suspension parts, etc., so if it's not especially failure-prone, no need to mention it. Thanks again!

I wouldn't sweat the timing chains too much.
Its only a fraction of vehicles in those years and you get lots of prior warning.
