Fuel supply problem

Postby aoist » Thu Jun 23, 2022 2:16 pm

My 2002 pathfinder has a peculiar problem , if it is not started within a few days it won't start. I have to pull out the air filter and squirt in some starting fluid to start it. Any clues as to the cause of this?
Clogged fuel filter? Or?
Thanks much
Tom

Probably the filter. I'm pretty sure an '02 won't have a check valve on the fuel pump. On most of the older stuff which has a filter, the check valve is in the filter. If the check is stuck open, the fuel inside the rail will slowly siphon back into the tank.

I think you are correct, Do you have any idea where the fuel filter is located?

Where is the fuel line check valve on this car? I don't think it's built into the filter. So if it's not on the top of the fuel pump itself, it must be on the line somewhere.

If it's not built into the filter then it's probably built into the pump. One other thing you should check, on an '02 you have a Fuel Pressure Regulator. Pull the vacuum line after running the truck and then letting it sit a few minutes. If there's fuel in the line then the diaphragm is leaky and atmospheric pressure is letting the fuel in the rail siphon back to the tank via the return line.

Cute flick. Chance went to the Rainbow Bridge last year, we miss him a lot. That's a pet palace he's sitting in on the back of our Kawi Vulcan. Coolest road warrior ever.

Thanks VStar650CL. I think I'm just going to install a check valve as closest to the gas tank as I
possibly can. Maybe a simple $10 remedy, we'll see. Again thanks!
