Rounded manifold nut 2008 V8

Postby stugry » Sat Sep 17, 2022 12:40 pm

I'm trying to put on JBA headers and got all 7 other driver side nuts loose. The last one closest to the front of the vehicle rounded with a six point socket. Question is; would it be easier to get the correct socket(unusual inverse hex looking thing) to remove the stud with the nut attached or try all the various techniques people use to remove rounded nuts?

With enough Free All/PB Blaster these bolt extractors from HF haven't let me down yet.

Didnt work. I can't get enough room to force the bolt extractor onto the mangled nut. As of now I think im just going to cut the thing off and pray that I have enough stud visible after removing the manifold to get it soaked for a few days in blaster and grab it with vice grips. I've tried to find someone local that could come weld a nut on to back it out but no luck. I'm also not sure there's room to properly drill it out if that fails so for my skill level I'd basically be screwed at that point.

Does anyone have a guess how much the JBAs would leak if I just didnt have them secured with the bottom front most drivers side nut? And would that leak cause actual issues or just be annoying?

On a positive note, I succeeded in replacing the passenger side headers and motor mounts without much issue at all. Gotta enjoy the small victories.

Have you tried a vice grip directly onto the stripped nut and just take the stud out with it?

With the location of this nut in front/under the manifold pipe I cant figure out any way to grab the stug without taking off the manifold and hoping there's enough stud left to grab afterwards, which is what I'm going to end up trying I think. Once the manifold is out there will be much miter room to get leverage in the stud.

Is there enough room for a chisel and hammer to split the nut or cut it in half with a Dremel/grinder. If you can split it off you can get the header off and then have room to do the two nut method to try to get the stud out?

Also, with the cost of labor you might be better off buying a cheap welder.

Found a relative with a welder. Took all of 5min to get it off. Now I get to enjoy hours of putting it all back together. Thanks for all the advice
