Nissan Fluids Or Aftermarket

Postby AS_The_Crow_Flys » Sat Mar 04, 2023 5:18 pm

Hi All,

I don't feel like going to the dealer for fluid changes. I am prepping to change the front and rear diffs. the transfer case, probably the transmission, and power steering fluids.

Wondering what people's thoughts on these fluids are. Should I go out of my way to get Nissan specific fluids or should I go aftermarket.

For instance, the rear calls for GL-5 synthetic 75w-90 in the rear but hypoid super 80w-90 in the front. But why would that even matter? Like why not use the 75w-90 in both. Is one hypoid and one not?

Or the trans and transfer case both call for ATF (one J and one D). But why not use an aftermarket fluid that is D and J compliant in both.

Also are there any recommendations on the power steering fluids.

Recommendations appreciated.

Also does anyone know the crush washers to use for the Diffs? Trans appears to use the same crush washer but I can't seem to find the info on the diff seals.

I go for any trusted brands + price.
I always use the search filters on the manufacturer websites to cross check.

I went with Lucas for transfer case, power steering and brake fluid. Just made sure it's compatible through the

I went with Castrol Multi for Tx fluid.

I simply believe it the missed maintenances that affect any vehicle.

Addon question on fluids.

It looks like the vast majority of gear oils include LS additives. But I am fairly certain I do not have a limited slip. So, ... should I avoid fluids with LS additives, or it doesn't matter.

Here are two examples of what appear to me to be the same but for the LS additives.
GL-5 75w-90
no additives
https://www.redlineoil.com/75w90-ns-gl-5-gear-oil
with additives
https://www.redlineoil.com/75w90-gl-5-gear-oil

Also drain plug gasket for Front and Rear DIffs appears to be 11026-4N200, possibly transfer case as well.

When I punch in my vehicle type (2005, SE, 4WD, 4.0) onto the Redline site, it only specifies one type of fluid compatibility.

Nissan KLD37-00001P = 75W90 GL-5

What is interesting to me :
For Nissan Part #'s

999MP-DF200P is the spec in your manual as you have listed...
999MP-NS200P is the spec for a Nissan CVT.

I have to assume these acronyms mean the same thing "NS".
When looking up the NS (non-slip), it advocates that this is for use in transaxles that require hypoid-protection, and that is only specified in the Nissan manual for front final drive, and it's a different oil.

I've always used aftermarket fluids in my 2006 SE.
Either Mobil 1 or Valvoline full synthetic 75w-90 in both diffs.
Either Castrol Transmax Import Multi-Vehicle or Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle ATF in the transmission and transfer case. This can also be used for power steering too.

Hi All,

So, I forgot that I had a gallon of Lucas full synthetic GL-5 75w90 unopened in the garage (forgot what I bought it for but I have it already). I will just give it a mix in case the additives settled and then use it for the front and rear diffs.

I also bought these in bulk which look like they should work for the diffs.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VT14FL7?ps ... ct_details
Here is the size: outside diameter: 22 mm/ 0.86 inch, inner diameter: 14 mm/ 0.55 inch, thickness: 2 mm/ 0.08 inch;

I also bought these in bulk which appear to be the same for the engine oil and transmission. Transfer case is unclear but appear to be the same for the transmission.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09P47YM8D?ps ... ct_details

Still looking at my transmission fluid options. Basically, trying to see what would work and is priced well. Also trying to see if i can find a synthetic option.

I also used the full line of Valvoline products on manyy of my vehicles for a long time.
For some reason I havent lately not sure why. :|

Still use either the valvoline or the castrol in the transmission.

Looks like I am a little early on the trans and diffs, here is my list of everything that i know was done. Interestingly i do not see the serpentine belt. Weird i doubt very much that it has an original 15 year old belt on it.

I will do the power steering fluid. I doubt that was ever done. and do the transmission, transfer case, and diffs, and radiator fluids at 130k. but i am going to buy the ATF fluid now as its on sale and shit just keeps getting more expensive.

FYI - Autozone in the link above let me order 4 gallons of the ATF for 108.47. Using the 4$ off deal and promo code MARCHSAVINGS

You miles may very but this stuff is usually about 35$ a gallon so 4 for this price is pretty good.

I forgot which engine do you have, V6 or V8?
I noticed the timing chain/guides job in there hence the question :)

Its the V6, it was super noisy so I had to have the timing chain guides done and got a pittance from the manufacturer (there was a schedule to cover some of the cost).

Does the V8 have the same problem?

No. it does not.
For some reason I thought you had a V8 so that line item caught my attention.

Did it sound like a vacuum cleaner? Was it the recall for the timing chain and tensioner?

Root cause years later was a mis-stamped timing chain from Borg Warner. I had the initial repair under warranty in 2009 or 2010 but back then, it was thought to be the tensioners. I paid out of pocket three years ago in 2020 when the noise came back, and got the now full repair (chain, tensioners, guides, etc.).

If yours was partially covered I assume this was the why.
