Timing Chain Replacement

Postby hobowes » Wed Apr 03, 2024 8:55 am

Good Morning! We have just picked up a 2013 Pathfinder Platinum. We got a great price on it because we believe it needs the timing chains replaced. I have searched and cannot find a good source of information on what should be replaced in addition to the timing chains (and associated items) when we have the work done. For example, should we replace the water pump? Drive Belt & tensioner? Hoses? Spark plugs (especially the rear bank)? Do the valve covers and upper intake need to come off so replace those gaskets? And any recommendations for the timing chain kit and gaskets? Thanks in advance!

Replacing the water pump along with the chains is a good idea on any VQ. The job is doable but difficult with the engine in. The rear cover is an engine-out job but isn't necessary just to replace chains. The rocker covers do need to come off for chain replacement, and on a '13 new ones and a fresh PCV Valve and hose will be a good idea -- especially the hose, since a collapsed one will sludge and ruin your engine. The complete TC kit should include all three chains, tensioners, guide shoes, both front cover o-rings, and a new crank seal.
