Any issues running 265/50R20's on a 13 Platinum

Postby hobowes » Wed Apr 10, 2024 10:58 am

Good afternoon everyone! I did some searching but could not find any info on running 265/50R20's on my 2wd 13 Platinum. They are only a smidge taller than stock and a little less than an inch wider. I have run a size up on my other Nissans and never had a problem. The thought is, being a bit wider would protect the wheels better from curb rash, if they ever encountered a curb...

Thanks for your replies!

You shouldn't have an issue with that setup. But contrary to what you said, it's a taller tire that helps protect the rim from pothole damage, not a wider one. You will take a bit of a hit on gas mileage with a wider tire.

Thanks for the input Grumpah! While the potholes are an issue, I am more concerned with curb rash on the face of the wheel. I have done the 1+ on the tires on my wife's Rogue and our daughters Juke without issues either.

Thanks!

No sidewall height (or tire width for that matter) is going to help prevent curb rash. You'll just gave to be careful when you parallel park.

Years ago (I'm talking the 50's), cars used to have curb feelers that would make a noise when they scraped the curb that alerted you when you were too close.

You can still buy universal curb feelers:

I'm actually sort of surprised that more people don't use them, with the popularity of very low profile tires on expensive alloy rims.

It's true that a wider tire will squat more and the tire will tend to rub before the rim does, but, the sidewall of any radial tire is it's most vulnerable part, much thinner than the tread and prone to delamination from a direct impact. So you're likely just trading curb rash for dangerous sidewall bubbles. Pretty much a Hobson's choice IMHO.
