Pirelli Scorpion ATR vs. BFGoodrich Advantage T/A Sport LT

Postby Zen_master » Sat Aug 10, 2024 6:37 pm

I have run two sets of Cooper Discoverer H/T Plus tires on my truck and have zero complaints. With the treadwear indicator suggesting I should get a new set of tires before winter I learned that Cooper no longer manufactures this tires, or at least not this version.

In searching for an alternative I have it narrowed down to the Pirelli Scorpion ATR or the BFGoodrich Advantage T/A, both in 265/60R18.

My truck sees mostly road use with occasional snow, but not enough to warrant dedicated winter tires. A few times in the spring I venture off pavement onto gravel/dirt mining trails to access old strip mine fishing ponds.

What was nice about the Coopers is they had a wide and squared off shoulder as opposed to a more rounded shoulder, which gave the truck a sporty look. Curious if anyone has first hand experience with either of these potential replacement options, and maybe even has a photo of their rig to share.

Thanks in advance.

I don't have any experience with any of those, but I'd go with the Pirelli's based on tire design, reviews, and is an all terrain tire as oppose to a highway tire.

Re: Bridgestone Alenza vs Michelin CrossClimate2

Scratch that!

Costco is running a deal on Bridgestone tires currently. The Alenza AS Ultra appears to be a decent tire and with all the perks (free rotation, roadside assistance, etc) plus the discount it is a pretty good deal. Anyone have experience with this tire?

Next month Michelin goes on sale at Costco, and while not quite as generous of a discount all the other Costco perks apply. The all-around best rated tire from Michelin is the CrossClimate2. While it is a great performing tire (have a set on an XUV), it is an interesting tread pattern that might stand out more on a Pathfinder, with the larger wheel well, than on an XUV. Anyone have experience with this tire on the R51?

It's an usual tread design, for sure, the CC2. I think they belong more on an cross over SUV.

IMHO you get a superior tire, in a Michelin. I guess the gaps are getting more narrow now.
If you purchase a Costo Michelin brand, you get an extra year warranty on that same Michelin tire.

I purchased Costco Defender takeoffs, and have now two years on them. Honest to G, - I can not tell if they have any wear on them. I rotate tires myself and they look like new.

Went with the Alenza due to the 80k mile warranty. Could very well be the last tire I ever buy for this truck. No complaints so far other than not as sporty looking as the discontinued Coopers. Steering isn't as heavy, in part due to surface contact patch not being as wide as the Cooper "plus". Road noise is minimal and ride quality is excellent. All in all by far the most practical option just doesn't look as cool as the preceding tires.
