Checking it Once, Checking it Twice...

Postby silverarrow27 » Fri Oct 25, 2024 6:43 pm

I recently installed a set of rebuilt Radflo coilovers and rear shocks for my R51 Pathfinder. In the midst of me installing and having my Pathfinder finally get an alignment, I've been driving it around the last couple weeks and felt that the rear shocks may need damping adjustments since the back end felt soft and bouncy. One of the original reasons why I had dropped them off to be rebuilt in the first place. I crawled under my Pathfinder this evening to look around and behold, I found the rear passenger shock wasn't even bolted onto the lower control arm. It was hanging off to the side of the lower control arm. Now missing a bearing spacer for the lower shock mount and the bolt. What baffles me is that the tech doing my alignment didn't see a loose or unmounted shock when doing my alignment. Maybe it came loose and fell off after my alignment? I'll never know, but what I also find strange is that I now have a missing lower shock bolt, shock bearing spacer, and check engine light after getting my suv back from an alignment. The last visit was my second with them. Coincidence?

Anyhow, just a reminder to double check all your nuts and bolts when taking on a massive project of replacing control arms, ball joints, and new coilovers and shocks all at the same time.

Best tip I've seen is to purchase a paint pen / marker and mark the bolts, after you've torqued them to spec.
different colors to use, the next time.

I actually do need to do that so I can often look at my alignment to make sure they haven't moved. I have knocked my rear alignment off before by hitting dips a bit too hard. I'll do that once I get my replacement bearing spacer and new bolt in.
