VK Swap (Column shift vs Floor Shift) calling smj999smj or VStar650CL

Not that I am considering it, but it's a question in the sense, that I do not understand the differences.
Calling smj999smj or VStar650CL, but anyone who knows the technical aspect or reasons, it would be appreciated.

For the 2004-2015 Titan, there is some confirmed information that you can not install a Column Shift TCM into floor shift on R51/Frontier/Xterra due to the differences..

Here is the topic.

This thread indicates that when installing the column shift TCM, the transmission stays in high gear, and will not let you proceed. You need to install the TCM from a floor shift model.

How is this possible?

The physical transmission is in the physical park position, in both cases, with the pawl engaging. There is no mechanical change to the transmission to shift it from P R N D L, etc, externally or internally.

Is this information correct?

Additionally. If someone were to consider a 2016+ Titan VK56VD swap, all of the models are Column Shift.
Would it possible that you can install a 2016+ VK56VD into a Frontier, if no floor shift TCMs were ever produced?

The only TCMs that were floor shifts for the VK56VD are the Infinity models: QX56/80 M56X.
Does one need one of these TCMs to be reprogrammed to match the ECM of the Titan to make VD swap possible?

I don't think you'd need to fiddle with the ECM in order to use the Infiniti TCM's, but keep in mind that the TCM's on axial Nissan/Infiniti trannies reside inside the tranny. Technically they're part of the Valve Body. So to avoid conflicts, you'd probably be best served to swap the whole tranny and not just the VB. The column and console shifters are wired completely differently, and in most cases, even though the TCM hardware may be identical, it isn't possible to reprogram them to a different part number series. That can generally be done on models from about '16 up by programming the part as "New Blank", but on earlier stuff you don't have that option.

Thank you for the quick reply.

So...

If one would get a donor 16-19 Titan for a project, complete engine and transmission...

As it is a column shift only, would there be any programming available to make it work with a floor shift on an R51 at all?

There are some benefits of going the Titan route, as compared to an Infinity/Armada route, as far as I can tell. The transfer case, part time 4WD, etc.

Trying to wrap my head around what a new blank means - does it mean a special 3rd party would have to be involved in placing code for it to recognize the floor shifts, etc.

Since around '16 Nissan has been providing all the primary C/U's in blank and unprogrammed condition, with only a bootloader onboard to talk to the CANbus but no operating firmware. So there's an option to load firmware as "New Blank", which can also (incidentally) be used to program a used part to a different firmware series by pretending it's new. That option isn't available for most older C/U's, because they all came factory pre-programmed and the Consult3+ only needed the ability to update them.

Great information. I'm still a bit curious on how they would make a column shift program convert into a floor shift routine, and the details surrounding it, but this is for those 3rd party gurus to capture and figure out in the firmware possibilities.

Thanks again.
