08 Rear Window Tinting & External Antenna Question

Postby shv2sail » Tue Nov 10, 2009 1:09 pm

Does anyone know if the rear side windows or tailgate factory window tinting is a metal-based tinting or something non-metalic integrated into the glass? I'm about to add an on-glass antenna for my fire department radio and it specifically states not to add this type of antenna to windows with "metallic sunscreening".

Any insight much appreciated!

Probably not going to be a problem as the antenna for the radio itself in on the glass. I would think the same rule would apply for that antenna.

Thanks...I was thinking along those same lines as well but thought I'd see if anyone had the answer from the manufacturer.

ALSO, if anyone has success/failure on using thru-glass antennas on the rear windows I'd like to hear about that as well!

Thanks!!!

I mounted the antenna today on the rear passenger window and it seems to work just fine. I just avoided mounting it over any of the in-glass am/fm antenna wires.

Would you mind posting some pics of the antenna installed as well as your radio installation? Thanks!

Will do. Just waiting for the mount for my handheld radio (aka scanner) and I'll snap some shots when it's all installed. Not looking forward to the cable run, but I've done it before when I installed a rear-view camera so at least I know how all the plastic comes off

Sounds good! Look forward to seeing it.

A couple of photos of the install.

This is the portable on an adjustable mount (eBay $19). Mounted to the drivers front inboard seatbolt.

This is the inside side of the antenna mount. I trimmed some of the moulding so the cabling would route cleanly into the inside of the interior mouldings. I then routed the cable under the flooring to under the drivers side seat.

Looks good! I'd be interested in seeing under the seat where the mount is attached as well. And what kind of antenna did you purchase? What does the mast look like on the outside?

Does the radio being mounted there cramp your leg room any when driving? Since I'm not in my Path right now it's hard to remember know close my knee is to where you have the radio....I'm thinking it would not interfere, though...

Thanks again!

The antenna is a Radio Shack thru-window scanner antenna...kind of looks like a long cell phone antenna. Mounting the radio there doesn't cramp my legs any and is both out of the way and easily seen/accessed from the driver's seat.

I'll take a pic or two of the radio (fire scaner) mount when I get a chance.
