Lift Dilema

Postby Suliman » Sun Nov 29, 2009 10:00 pm

Thanks to rragpaoa and his recent post, I'm not sure which route to take. His or xd9-g19's.

Front: New UCAs, coilovers, springs vs. the bilstein
Rear: New springs and shocks vs. springs

I want to go no more than 2". I don't plan on upgrading anything else or the system further. On top of that, the Current plan is to stick with the 16" tire and go to a SE OR tire in 265/75-16 (31.6h x 10.4w) or 275/70-16 (31.2h x 10.8w). This is just a even trade in .4" of either height or width. Not sure there is a huge case for either tire here, other than what may be available. (If I look at new rims, then I'll need to look for a different off-set to accommodate those nice 285's I want, haha, and the "CFO" of the house may not like that!)

You can get more suspension travel with coilovers and aftermarket control arms.
There are three companies that make aftermarket control arms. total Chaos, PRG, and Calmini has just release their new arm.
For coilovers in the 2.5 size there is King, ICON, SAW, and Radflo.

If you decide to get coilovers I found a place that sells ICON 2.5 coilovers for $840 shipped!
http://www.outlawoffroadstore.com/18056 ... 6_GAS.html
Now that is a great price. You can buy 2.5 coilover for almost the same price that other people have paid for 2.0 coilovers and you can still choose or valving and spring rate.

Looks like they call for the Ext Heavy version, $945 a piece...(lol, sorry, meant a pair)

Time to start doing some real research in this... full up with the coilovers and UCAs starts getting expensive where just a front shock and rear spring is cheap in comparison. Damn.

If I had the money I would go with the coilovers and UCA's, i did it the way it is due to how cheap a 2in lift for the pathy was and that if I choose to get the calmini lift everything would work with it. That and I couldnt stand that the pathy wasn't lifted. :D

Go with the Radflo Coilovers! (A bit biased :) ) They are adjustable from stock height to 3" and are pre-set at 2". I have mine at 2.5" with all that armor up front and underneath.

With the 2", you can fit the 285 on there with no problems. However, the 275 may not be a bad option either. That would be a good compromise.

Where is a good place for decent Radflo 2.5 prices?

Are these $800-$900 prices for the Icon's per side, or for a pair?

Since only one is listed at $945 and the others are at $840 I would call them and see if them would match the price. Who knows that may have forgot to change that one.

Colovers are sold in pairs.

If I didn't go with ICON I would have gone with SAW.

If it's lifted the 2", I think the front with the 285/70-16 would still rub the frame (and the plastic, but that can be adjusted) unless I went with new rims with a different off-set. True?

I'd have to stick with the stock 265/70-16 (30.6x10.4) for now. My upgrade choices are pretty limited I think where I'm at right now, but I'll need to research some local shops and "hablo" with them. I think I would go with a 265/75-16 (31.6x10.4) over a 275/70-16 (31.2x10.8 ) just for the .4 height diff. On a side note, I'll have to dig out some weight differences between the 265, 275, and the 285s and if I need to swap some diff gears.... shouldn't though.

Well, lets start with the rears.
No matter what, the ass-end is just too mushy for my taste and wallows too much over bumps and off-road. Since I'm going to lift it, mind as well use a 2" lift spring and new rear shocks. I'm thinking here simply using the AC lift coils and see if I can find Bilsteins for the rear (rather not get Rancho), or possibly another brand. Thoughts on this?

As for the fronts....
I think I still need to decide if I go the real route with UCAs, or just get leveling shocks.
If I go with the UCAs, right now it seems between:
- PRG UCAs and Radflow COs with their default Ebachs ($1268 retail)
or
- Total Chaos UCAs and Icon COs ($1620 retail)
- Others?

According to TC:
We highly recommend adding lower control arm alignment cams (PT# 91350) on vehicle models that are not equipped with these adjusters from the factory in order to maintain alignment specs.

Any idea how to tell on an 06 if they are there?

Looks like just a price perspective and how happy rragpaoa is with his, it would be the setup I'd probably pick at this time.

Those Radflos you have priced must be the 2.0 size. The 2.5 size goes for $1000.

AS I mention earlier Calmini came out with a control arm and it is cheaper then the others. Here is a link. http://www.purenissan.com/D40Control%20Arm.htm

If money is an issue you could get coilovers for stock control arms then later when you can afford control arms you can have the coilovers redone. With just an internal spacer removed, they can be used with an aftermarket UCA for more droop

Sorry, Dunno the part numbers. Greg @ PRG set me up and I didn't ask any questions. I drove to his garage to get the install as well as test the prototype rear Radflo shocks.

Suliman: did you consider the Radflo rear shocks? I have the prototypes. Greg @ PRG and I have tweaked them numerous times to get the right tune, and we think we got it right. May want to give him a call.
As far as the tires go, with the PRG setup, you won't have any problems with the 285s. You have to remove the mudflaps and do a slight heatgun to the plastic.

Are they in production? Their page says October availability, but who knows. I absolutely loathe Calmini for posting things that never materialize for years.

Only thing I see listed anywhere from SAW is for the Titan.
