cant get 97 pathfinder into 4H, only goes into N and 4L!?!

Postby JLiusifer » Wed Dec 09, 2009 9:38 pm

hey guys, we just got a bunch of snow in MN. I have always used 2wd (N). for some reason I cannot shift up into 4H or 2H. It only lets me shift into 4L. When I had the truck into 4H i could tell the 4wd works. I dont know what is going on but i cannot push it up into 4H at all. does anyone know what could be wrong?

I own a 97 pathfinder.

Thanks!

I have a '95 Pathfinder XE with the same problem! It has been a couple years since I last needed to use 4H or 2H and now I can't. I can shift to 2L just fine and have not had any major problems/repairs with my vehicle since last using 4WD successfully.

N???? N is the transfer case is in neutral IE the truck will not move. If you are driving the truck, it is in either 2h or 4h.. you pull the lever back to get into 4H all the way forward is 2H... If you were in the N Position on the transfer case you would not move... Double check where you are trying to shift

Oh ya, i too have a 97 pathfinder..

Is your transmission in N (automatic) or clutch in (manual)...key to getting in and out of 4L. You also might not be pushing hard enough when you push in on the transfer lever. I know I need to give mine a good shove to get out of 4L and back into 4H...

What are you going through/towing/plowing that you need 4L?

fron the shifter knob (starting from the top to bottom = 2H, 4H, N, 4L)....Currently it is at N. I cannot move the shifter upward to 4H or 2H. The only thing I can do is pull back and go into 4H. When I pull back i'm assuming it goes into 4L (green light on dash turns on)

AM i wrong? I read the directions and it says something about pushing downward to get into 2H and 4H. I tried that but I cannot push downward and shift into 4H or 2H. can someone help me?!?!?

PM answered. I'm still assuming you are currently in 2H. with the transfer case in the N possiton, your truck WILL NOT move. Green light on the dash = 4H. Place your transmission into neutral and then you should be able to pull transfer case back into the neutral position and back to 4L. if you are truely in 4L you will know it because your truck won't move much faster than 25MPH and you will hear your transfer case whine and engine will over rev.

The Green light (4 wheels) will go on in either 4H or 4L...

The ATP light will go on if the transfer case is in N...

Make sure the transmission is in N (auto) or the clutch is in (manual) when you try to switch between 4H and 4L.

Push downwards on the transfer lever and slightly forward, you should engage N at this point...once it goes forward, let it release upwards and you should be in 4H {CORRECTION}. You need to give it a good hard push to get it in and out of 4L.

Okay so maybe my pathfinder is different than yours but... all the way forward is 2h first click back is 4h, second click back is neutral and third back is 4l. So not sure what you are talking about pushing the lever forward for 4l... we are talking about a 97 pathfinder

i dunno if im understanding u guys but the unit can only be shifter down one time. once u pull down to 4L it doesnt shift any lower. I have never been able to push the shifter forward past N gear.

If it was in neutral you would not be able to drive the truck.... youj are in 2H and shifting down into 4H.. no ifs ands or buts... walk out to your paThfinder.. pull it back to what you call 4L.. shift your transmission into neutral... then press the 4wd shifter down toward the ground aNd pull it back.. that is N on the transfer case.... sorry I'm trying to do all this from my phone..

Also really quick when it is in 2H the shift lever looks like it could be pushed further forward but it cannot... in 4L the lever is WAY back.... just figured id through that out there.
