Switching out of 4WD

When switching from 4WD to 2WD it'll take a while sometimes. Sometimes so long that I'll switch it again to 4WD and back to 2WD to try and get it to go. Any thoughts on what might be causing this, is this just how they are?

Normal. The mechanics of disconnecting a moving drive train are complicated. Speed, torque, acceleration all need to be considered before it can disengage. I find letting off on the gas for a few seconds will often let it pull out of 4WD.

Since that time, some of the discussions on the board have pointed to worn out u-joints as a culprit that can cause the 4wd to take a long time to disengage.

I found that turning the steering wheel at low speed causes it to disengage immediately.

The first month I had mine it switched in/out immediately. The other day it started taking awhile and once was about 5 miles (throught turns, stops, etc.). This morning it turned off immediately.

I've had a lot of 4x4's and almost all just required letting off the gas. Not sure why this one wants to be weird but it (unfortunately) seems to be normal for these. At least it switches IN right away.

this is the only way it fully disengages for me.

When it seems to have problems coming out of 4WD, I found that if I get down below 25mph and throw it in neutral, it'll disengage. Then I can slide it back to DRIVE and continue on. This is after replacing the front u-joints. Prior to replacing them, I would have to come to a complete stop, and go in reverse for about 2 feet.

I have switched mine from 2hi to 4wd from speeds of 10- 55 mph and have no problems with it engaging or disengaging, like others say turning the wheel will make it disengage faster.

Had a chance to play with this the last couple days. The only way mine will disengage from 4wd is to coast for about 5 seconds. Works every time for me. My vehicles in the past just required letting off the throttle for a second but this one takes 5.

Guys, just to understand - is this a transmission w/o AUTO mode? Trying to understand - what are you talking about, haven't heard anything about such issue here in EU.

This is the non-auto 4x4 system that can switch between 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo.

mine is a non-auto 4wd system and sometimes it takes a while to switch back and sometimes it does it right away. I chock it up as a quirk of the new pathy

without droping speed and while in gear romp on the accelerator for a brief second hit it good while it is trying to go back to 2wd it should go right in. Works on Armada/Titan too worn or tight u-joints can affect this as well.
