255/65 r16 VS. 255/70 r16

Postby D3COY » Mon Feb 15, 2010 6:43 pm

Im purchasing new tires soon. my pathfinder is stock and has 255/65 r 16 size tires on it. i want to purchase either a bridgestone dueler, firestone destination, or mesa AP tire. the only thing is these tires come in 255/70 r16 size.

would putting this tire on my car cause any problems like rubbing, decreased turning radius, etc.????

many others have done the same thing as what you are bout to do for the exact same reasons. It will not rub. It will put your pathy .5" higher and you will still have plenty of space left between your mudflaps and the tire.

It brings your total tire size from 29" to 30"... It WILL do change a little bit your speedometer reading...you will actually go faster than you think..so if it's saying 60 on your speedo, you might be going like 61-62..

you can always use this nice tool here to have the whole story:

I too want to purchase Firestone Destination's

I have the same question and after some research and visiting tire size calculators I have come to the conclusion that the 255/70/16 are to big and could be dangerous for my 2004 pathfinder.

According to a tire calculator you should maintain a tire diameter no greater than 3% of the stock tire or you could have brake failure

The 255/70/16 comes out to be 3.46% greater in diameter than the stock 255/65/16. After a little more research I found that an acceptable alternative would be a 245/70/16, they have a diameter of 1.6% greater than stock

Anyone with a little more knowledge please chime in. I too am a newby and not very mechanical. I am basing this on some research.

I actually just replaced my tires. I didn't get the firestone destinations. I wanted to get the right size tires so i bought sumitomo all terrains. i like them. they arent as offroady as some other all terrain tires but they get the job done. they have excellent grip and are good for mild offroading. ive gone through mud and sand and they pass the test.

Yeah grumple your probably right. Thats why i ended up getting the right size. i decided it was best to go with what the factory specs are. i'll post a pic of my new tires. i think their tread is pretty cool too.

255/65-16 vs. 255/70-16

Looking forward to the picturesl. After speaking with a tire exclusive garage this am, they also suggested not to go with a 255/70-16. They agreed that a 245/70-16 will work fine. After reading many reviews and getting the tire shops opinion i'm going to go with the Firestone Destination A/T's. I will post a picture when they are mounted tomorrow.
