Oil preasure gauge at max

Postby twinblown » Mon Jul 13, 2009 5:46 pm

A few months back my oil preasure gauge started acting up strangely and fluctuating between the middle and the max. I do not believe I have a preasure or oil level problem and maybe just a bad sensor. Has anyone else experienced it? also my oil light on the dash no longer comes on when I turn the ignition. I have had numerous oil changes since and everything seems to be fine, car runs great. Any help is appreciated! :)

I would check the oil pressure with a manual guage first before replacing a sensor. Just to make sure the oil pressure is not to high. High oil pressure will blow seal. I would also check to make sure the wirring is not broken or shorted to power or ground.

BUMP!

My Pfinder just started this. I changed my oil Monday, now the oil pressure guage is pegged all the way on high.

A google search revealed alot of this with Pfinder, Xterra, and Frontier models with the VQ40 engine. No one seems to follow up with their resolutions.

Any ideas?

Ok that makes two of us :) I have yet to diagnose it and been driving it like so for the last 20K miles. I found the test procedure in the SM , i Just got to get around to doing it. Does your oil light come on when you open the switch?

Are these unusual oil pressure indications with OEM oil filters, or aftermarket?

Well, I fixed it last night. Only thing is, I aint sure what fixed it.

I bought a new pressure sender and replaced it. Thing is, when I was under there to change it, I saw alot of oil blow-by on the crossmember back to the transmission pan. It was coming from the seal at the oil filter. I decided to replace the sender anyway since my Pfinder has 108,000 miles on it.
Some of my google searches found people who thought the filter could be defective causing the high pressure. I went ahead and replaced the filter while I was there, so I dont know which fixed it.

I have been using Mobil 1 filters and Mobil 1 oil, for about 30,000 miles. I used Mobil 1 oil and an oem filter previous to that.

At the time mine did it I was using OEM filter. Since then no matter if I use aftermarket or OEM the oil meter is pegged at max.
