My '08 never downshifts when braking. It's weird for me because Toyota and Honda program that into their transmissions so I still haven't gotten used to it. I drive a lot of hills and always liked that feature because then it was usually in a good gear for accelerating out of a turn. Unless my PF is not working properly....

Mine (european) downshifts if I brake and get under 60km/h.

I think it is some sort of downhill assist. my 08 does it.

I was just about to say...

From all the replies, it almost seems like this is a feature, not a defect but what would be the reasoning for it? I read the manual for some sort of explanation of down hill descent control but couldn't find anything.

Is it tied to hard braking and why does it only happen down hill (for me)?

Is it a safety feature to assist in stopping?

Is it tied to a certain speed?

I can't be convinced it's a feature when it only started happening for me in the past couple of months. I thought it could be due to my brakes being worn out but I installed new brakes and it's still happening.

FWIW...Some other SUVs have descent control (the 4runner comes to mind) but it's documented.

Are any of yours that do this off-road models or not?

I'm about 99.9% certain that they did, although it was most likely the first model year for the R51, so 2005? I only remember that because of a few discussions about the whole point of having the Off Road if it is only 2wd.

Anywho, mine will sometimes downshift, but not very often. The stretch of I-80 from SLC to Park City is pretty steep in parts, and I really wish it would downshift then, rather than turning off the OD and letting it basically coast downhill until the rpms get too high, hit the brake, repeat. I really wish they come out with a manual in the next model.

That's entirely different. Mine has hill descent control also, but that's only for 4LO, as in incredibly slow speeds. I've used it a number of times and, while it makes enough noise to wake the dead, works extremely well.

Point taken. I meant to note that I thought it was only on the 4runner 4WD model. I had a 2WD 4runner and this was in the manual is why I remember.

I wouldn't be making a big issue out of this but I just found out about the ATF/antifreeze contamination issue and don't want my tranny to be ruined!

Nah, the downshifting is normal. I've seen it mentioned before in other threads here as well, so I really woulnd't worry about it. Just count yourself lucky that it does actually work for you.

I did some reseach and could only find this
S in 2x4 and 4x4
SE in 2x4 and 4x4 V6
SE in 2x4 and 4x4 V8
SE OFFROAD in 4x4 V6 only
LE in 2x4 and 4x4 V6 or V8
I could not find anywere that the R51 came in 2x4 OFFROAD.

When I search it I find links but they all turn out to be 4x4.

The only reason I mentioned it is because for MY 2005 the Kelly Blue Book website asks you to select:
  • XE
  • SE
  • SE Offroad
  • LE
Then the next step is selecting 2X4 or 4X4.

I'm not saying their site is at all accurate...just what I was lead to believe.
