New Key Programming

Postby deezx5 » Tue Jun 01, 2010 2:14 pm

2009 Pathfinder bought used with only one key and remote. Several questions.

I noticed the keys are about $20 each on ebay. How much do dealers usually charge for the key, and how much do they charge for programming?

Also are Nissans like Ford PATS2 keys so you can program your own key but you need 2 original keys, or is it dealer only?

Thanks I don't want to drop a fortune at the dealer if not necessary

A key blank, from the dealer Retails for about $22.00. Cutting should be included in the price of the key. Programming is about $100.

nope.

My pricing was different. $40 for the key, and $44.95 for programming.

Came to just under $100 with sales tax.

I WISH I could get $100 for prgramming a key! It's dealer only, you have to submit info to get the access code to program them. You will need ALL your keys, or the ones you don't bring won't work, and may put your truck into "lock-mode". Warn the guys if you have a remote start.

I was quoted from 2 different dealerships. One said $75, the other said $100. I used the high price figuring the chances of it being around there would be more likely.

Unfortunately, it is not. Although we dont like spending that kind of money to get a key made, it is on the low side for modern cars. Almost all car manufacturers, foreign and domestic, have pass code keys these day. Own a late model VW and lose the keys... $200!

Thanks for the responses guys I figured that I would have to go to dealer.

On a newer Ford if you have 2 working keys then you program additional keys yourself. Can you do this on a Nissan?

$75/100 USD should be including the price of the key. I think warranty pays something like 0.2/0.3, customer pay time a bit more. There is no way that I know to do it yourself no matter how many keys you have. If you've lost your keys, they can also erase ALL past remotes before reprogramming the ones you still have (if you wanna do them too). You can definately ask the parts guys to talk to the service dept to give you a break on labor for reprogramming. The price wont affect the availability of the part.

Keys and remotes are separate. You CAN program your own remotes, but not your own keys. I'm not sure if reprogramming your keys will make you have to reprogram your remotes.

I did this with my Xterra and Pathy - both had to be done at the dealer. I was told they contact Nissan and get a new "code" from the factory, then access the computer and add that code and all keys. So the keys are matched to the key "code" - and ONLY those keys. It cost me $20/key and $85/vehicle (1 hour service rate).

And they STERNLY warned me to NOT keep my X and Pathy keys together on the same keyring. For example if in the Pathy and it sees the X key - ALL keys could get locked out and I'm stuck. Only the dealer can unlock the system.

I'm in the same boat. Only one key and remote. The Stealership here said $60 for a reprogram.

Sounds like I should just get 2-3 extra keys made just in case. I'm not too concerned about the remote. I suppose we will just take it to the dealer for the next service and bite the bullet.

Spamcan That's funny about 2 keys but it makes sense I guess. A lot of Ford guys who install push button starters still have to put key in ignition unless they remove the chip and put near the ignition cylinder somewhere.

Is it wierd that I have an unprogrammed key (will only turn car over not turn it on) that when I use the remote start and use that key the car will work when engaged?

I've been needing to get a second copy made as my original somehow got a little bent. The ACE by my house has an advertisement saying they can program any manufacturers keys. Maybe I should check into it. I'll let you guys know.

remote starts have a bypass module for immobilizers. Thats why you have to tell the dealer if you have one. Also, when not installed properly, the eliminate the immobilizer at ALL times. The best way to install is that when you get into your warmed up car, it dies when you try to take it out of park or step on the brake unless the key is turned to the ON positon.
