Supercharger whine sound

Postby 56nomad56 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 10:54 am

We have had our '08 Path 4x4 for 2 months now (40K miles). I didn't notice the sound initially, but recently (and always present) I hear what almost sounds like a belt-driven supercharger whine sound. It's most obvious during acceleration and subsides to almost inaudible at cruise. Also not noticeable at idle. Present going straight or while turning, so don't think it's a power steering pump issue.

Anybody have any ideas? Bought an extended warranty but has a $250 deductible so if this is normal I don't want to take it down to get it diagnosed. TIA!

And yes, I've checked and it doesn't have a supercharger! :o

I'm having the same noise on my 05 with 57,000 mi. It only does it when I floor it. Cant hear it any other time.

I think you might mean the secondary timing chain tensioner?

This thread has a little more on it, but check for other threads on this site.

I'll look into the belt/tensioner issue. The vehicle has 40K miles (used), might be glad I got the extended warranty.
