Gas mileage?

Postby AussieMatt » Fri Jan 15, 2010 5:18 pm

Hi all.
I am curious as to how many miles you can get out of a tank.
I have a 98 Pathfinder V6 with 154000 miles and can usually get 240 miles out of a tank.

What octane are you using to get such high numbers?

I know it is recommended to use premium but I put in 87

I am just using regular. I do have locking front hubs though, I think that this helps quite a bit.

Best I've managed was 310. Not sure what that equals out to, but the best mileage I've recorded was 17.4 MPG.

Average is about 16 MPG.

Because the low fuel light comes on after you've consumed 17 gallons, with about 4 gallons of fuel left. You don't run the vehicle completely out of gas before refueling. If you did, you'd get 357 miles, but most people fill up at slightly below 1/4 of a tank when they're trying to figure their fuel economy. The longer you go on a single fill up of fuel, the more accurate your estimates get when you do the math.

If my calculations are correct, and the average person fills up with 4 gallons of fuel remaining you get a fuel range of 289 miles, which agrees with what people in this thread have posted.

Just took a 1000 mile round trip road burn last weekend...before my MAF started crapping out, I was getting about 300 on tank. Haven't had a chance to check it again since I replaced the sensor.

gas mileage

I've been tracking gas mileage in a book for 40 years. You will get worse mpg emptying the tank. I do not know why, you'd think the lessor weight would have a factor, but I get better mileage filling up b/t 1/2 and 3/4 full.
