good price for utility trailer?

Postby awake » Sat Sep 11, 2010 10:12 pm

looking at some guy's utility trailer that he's selling locally.

its a standard, wood floor, black utility trailer....its like 2 years old, and almost brand new aside from a little rust from sitting outside. its 4x8.

he's asking 300, i offered 200 cash....

seems that locally on craigslist, you can't even find a rusted out shitbox trailer for less than 400.

does this seem like a good price? i literally know nothing about trailers or the trailer market....im just picking it up to haul some mulch or larger cargo every once in a while.

Can not comment on price, just be aware there are two common axle sizes out there.
One is 2000#
Other is 3500#
The choice is determined by what you intend to carry.

$300 for a 2yo 4X8 with a 2000# axle would be fair, but if it has a 3500# axle then it's a deal... get it! Does he have photos on the add? Can you copy the link so we can see it?

In my neck of Virginia, a Carry-on brand 5x8 wood floor trailer start around $750 new at Lowes, Tractor Supply, etc.

Trailers are like cars and need to be titled at the DMV. Is the title clean? Other things to check are:

1. Are the tires still good? You're looking at $100 for new tires if needed (higher if the rims are bad).
2. Do the trailer lights work and the electric wire in good order? All new trailer lights and wires is probably $50 plus the time/effort to install.

If everything is good on the trailer, I'd say $300 is a better than fair for a wood floored 4x8. Of course, lower is always better.

You need to double-check things first for certainties before buying it. But I think you can not find a rusted out shitbox trailer for less than $400. If you're sure enough, for $300, it's a good deal then, go get it!
