Gas mileage

Postby HerbsPF » Wed Dec 08, 2010 5:15 pm

Been averaging about 16mpg with a mix of city-country driving. Only have about 1000 miles on the PF ans I'm hoping that it will improve some as miles pile up. Herb

:( I remember when I used to get those numbers, but since the lift and larger tires and recent warming of the motor in the mornings I only avg. 15 MPG.

I just picked up a 2006 LE and am only seeing around 13 with mixed driving. I'm sort of disappointed. Only getting about 200 miles out of a tank. It seems like I'm always at the gas station.

I have the V8 and get 16.5 consistantly.

I live in the country though and do not do much city driving.

This summer, I pulled about a 3Klb trailer along with 3 motorcycles on it down to North Carolina from Indiana and my Average only dropped down to 14 and change over a 800 mile range.

It's mostly about how you drive and what kind of mixed driving you do. It eats gas the most when you aggressively accelerate from the dead stop to crusing speed. I intentionally accelerate by depressing the gas pedal very minimally...whenever I could to conserve the gas consumption.

I'm getting 18~19 mpg from 10 to 20% city / 80 to 90% hwy driving. 21+ mpg from 100% hwy.

What I have noticed is that the PF likes 55 vs. 65+, whereas my former 98 Tahoe did just the opposite.
Example of the PF: On a 100 mile trip I take, the first 75 miles of 65MPH interstate the avg is almost 20MPG. The next leg of the trip is country state 55MPH road and some small towns, the whole trip average then climbs to 22MPG. (The Tahoe did 18-19 avg)
The PF is not as aerodynamic as we would like it to be. I wonder if it is partially due to the chopped-off rear end causing excessive drag. There is a product called “Air Tabs” that is sold to semi rigs. It somehow causes less trailer drag. Wonder how that would look on the top & sides of the PF? Better yet, would it help MPG?
As for the accelerator pedal designed action, it likes to show off the power capabilities of that 4.0L. Wish it was not so narrow in its range.

My first actual winter in the Pathfinder and it's now 14L/100km. :(

Most of my driving is 50/50 city/hwy.
I used to get mileage like that... I'm still trying to figure out if my tire change is the culprit or if I have something more serious on my hands.

Mine hovers around 15-17L/100km now.

I'll bet it is the tires. I recently put on brand new goodyear territory's 265/75/16 and noticed the mileage is going to sh*t, from 18.2 to 18.6 since the change.

It's a noticeably heavier tire, and also noticed it needs more gas to get up to speed than usual.

I do quite a bit of stop and go in the city, so that doesn't help.

L/100km, US MPG, or IMP MPG?

To clarify, my Fuel Economy range is now:

15-17 L/100 KM
13.8 - 15.6 US MPG
16.6 - 18.8 IMP MPG

used to get:

10-12 L/100 KM
19.5 - 23.5 US MPG
23.5 - 28.2 IMP MPG

Of course, one needs to factor in winter fuel, driving habits, tire size, etc. Just not sure if those factors add up to a 50% decrease in fuel economy.

I used to get 300-350km on 1/2 a tank. Now I get 200-250km.

If it is my tires, I think I will sell them in spring and get something smaller/lighter. I tow big with my path, and if the effort to turn the tires has really gone up this much, I worry about the effect on my torque converter and transmission.

They sure are great on snow and ice though. I think I mentioned before, but maybe I'll end up with the REV02s, but the P version vs the LT version. Also would go back to 265/70 instead of 265/75.

Weird thing is that when I check out the guys over a ClubFrontier.org, they all seem to run huge tires. Nobody complains about towing, and the truck guys don't seem nearly as anal about the fuel economy issues as us pathy guys. The way I figure, if I'm gonna get 13-16 US MPG, I might as well be driving a full size truck.
