possible engine/transmission problem?

Hello,

While shifting from 1st to 2nd the car shook. It was hesitant in changing gears it seemed. Same happened from 2nd to 3rd. I looked at the dashboard and the check engine light was on. Couple of hours later when I put the gear in reverse the engine shut off. I was able to start the engine again. Anybody know the problem? My dad was thinking the transmission or the timing belt as the culprit. We just changed the spark plugs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
