surface rust 2007

Postby asgard » Fri Jan 28, 2011 2:42 pm

For the second time in two years I am seeing surface rust appear on the tailgate . I have had this before - it is located at either end of the chrome handle, just where the corners turn down.
I had the first occurrence within warranty and the rust was treated -yeah right- and repainted, now that the salt is back on the road I see the slight rust traces reappear.

I spoke to the dealer about the closeness of the trim edge without any real protection causing the paint to be impacted when the hatch is closed.

Do any of the other members in the snow belt have this same issue.

I will be asking the dealer if the paint has a warranty and if so - they can do it again after winter.

Yep, 05 Xterra had it (warranty - but I had to fight), and now 08 Pathfinder.

I had orange spots all over the Pathfinder. It wasn't that bad as I waxed the suv twice a year.

Ever since I changed the front brake pads to ceramics, I don't see it anymore. I did find one on the rear hatch, just below the glass, scratched it away with my fingernail.

I had the same problem on my 07. When the dealer fixed it they put some kind of spacer behind the chrome tailgate handle/trim. Now it does not sit tight against the metal, supposedly they have found this will keep it from happening again.

There's a TSB on that that's been out for at least two years.

I was going to post a new thread on rust as I have a dime sized spot on my driver's door. I have an 08 and it goes in today for an oil change and they are looking at it.

I bought the exteneded warrenty, but not sure if it is covered. If not, am I better off going straight to Nissan or try to fight it with the dealer?

your warranty policy will indicate whether it is covered or not
you might check that first, then if covered, request the repair from the dealer
if it is a covered defect, there should be no fight

jasunderland- My understanding is 5 years, unlimited miles for corrosion, right? I would think your 08 (as well as my 07, for that matter) should be covered with no issues..

Up here in Canada (not sure if different in US) the warranty is for perforation or holes from rust. Surface rust is not covered.

I'm seriously considering buying an 05 white Pathy for 12500.It books for 14500 kbb wholesale. The dealership is putting in a new motor, but it has a considerable amount of rust. 2 spots on the hood,on the driverside quarter panel, tailgate, and the roof rain grooves. In addition it has paint peeling on the door coloms. I would appreciate any thoughts if it is worth the hassle of fixing the body. It's a SE model with all option except leather seats.

I don have to much experience with fixing rust but I had rust on my old 4runner and it only continued to get worse.
