Smells like Teen Spirit... well actually Burning rubber

Postby jasunderland » Mon Jan 17, 2011 6:46 am

I picked up my trailer this weekend and on the way home I could smell what I can only describe as burning rubber... you know the smell that happens before a tire blows...

I pulled over and checked all 4 tires on the trailer and none smelled funny... i Then checked the Pathy and for some reason the passenger rear smelled... It did not feel hot though. I checked the pressure and it was within the recommended 35 psi.

Any ideas as to what would cause this? Brakes??
I had the car in Auto, but would not think that would matter. I was about about 55-58 mph.

After i stopped i did not notice it again until I got home.

Thoughts?

When is the last time you had an alignment?

With the additional load on the back end of your truck, due to the independent rear suspension, more force is exerted on the inside of the tread of the tire. Perhaps it was warming up there?

Do you use air leveling equipment like the Airlift 1000? These really help my 05 to keep the tires flat on the road surface.

That's not it. Smells more like burning grease and metal.

Have you done the bypass? If so maybe your trans is getting too hot.

I've done the bypass. The smell is only coming from the right rear wheel/exhaust area. I checked my trans fluid about 20K miles after doing the bypass and it was perfectly clear/clean.

Maybe you shot some grease off a U-joint, or a minuscule oil leak that's getting onto the exhaust? Smells just like burning rubber.

Or a CV boot crack... CV grease smells just like burning rubber when it hit's exhaust.

I just did the brakes last weekend and the wheels and wheel liner were perfectly clean. I was actually surprised how clean they were for 45K miles.

I should mention I have a lift, so I have looked everywhere but can't figure out what it is.

The only things I can think of is a wheel bearing (but I don't hear it humming yet) or a dry CV joint (but I don't hear any clicking)
