What type of engine oil

Postby Gray » Sun Sep 07, 2008 11:21 am

Just wondering what everyone is running for engine oil in their PF. Up to now I've been using Motul 8100 E-Tech Lite ester based 0W30 and have been pleased as used oil analysis show really low wear metal numbers, but that oil has been discontinued.

I'm looking for a replacement ester based or maybe a PAO based quality engine oil, preferably recommended for use in turbocharged engines as these will have low oxidization qualities. PAO based Mobil 1 0W40 looks good as it's the factory fill for a number of high end engines including turbocharged Porsches but a couple of the Motul 300V series racing/road use oils, although more expensive look interesting as well.

I don't trust the dealership oil changes as they will often buy any cheap brand of 5W30 that comes in a bulk drum which might sit around the shop for weeks or months picking up ambient humidity until fully used.

it'll be Castrol Syntec for me. I used to be a Mobil 1 guy, but that stuff is over $40 for 5 litres now... geez!

Castrol was $38, and I have always liked its seal conditioning properties in my old hondas.

Hello all,

I will have service soon and I can't decide which oil should I buy.

I have Nissan Pathfinder 2007 LE 2.5 Dci 126kW diesel and without DPF.
Also service interval on my Pathfinder is every 30.000km.

Do I need 5W-30 or 5W-40 or something else?
Maybe Shell Helix Diesel Ultra 5W-40 ?

If I try on:

And type ...Pathfinder it is recommended 5w-40.

Shell Rotella synthetic is good stuff for diesels. And motorcycle engines for that matter. Tests very well. May sell under another name in other countries...

In addition to a good oil, I put in an additive to make me rest better at night, especially given the chain & tensioner guide wear problems that keep coming up on these engines… MotorKote. When added to my chainsaw bar oil, I see a huge difference. So I have faith that it must be doing something in the engine where I can’t see.

Hey all here is a silly question. I just bought the pathfinder the end of feb, and I deployed the first of March. I didn't have time to read up, but does the Pathfinder have an oil change indicator that tells you it needs the oil changed, or do you have to use a sticker in the window? Just trying to find out so I can tell the wife when and where to get the oil changed.

We cannot get Shell Rotella synthetic in Slovenia.

Soo do I need syntetic oil 5W30 or 5W40?

Which tyre of oil then?

Shell Helix Diesel HX7 AV 5W-30
Shell Helix Diesel Ultra 5W-40

Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W-40
Castrol Edge 5W-30

Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30

Any another good oil?

if u have the built on screen, there is a counter for reminding you of the service. you can manually set it up to warn you earlier.

Smarty,

I've never seen Mobil 1 synthetic lose an independent test. That being said all the synthetics are pretty good for the average user.

If your spec calls for "diesel" oil stick with that. The real difference though is that they've kept higher amounts of molybdenum, zinc and phosphorus that used to be in all engine oils. They form a last line of defense that only really matters if you're seriously abusing an engine.

In the end though, if you go with a synthetic and change it regularly (thousand miles per quart of oil in the sump...acidity and contamination, not viscosity breakdown is really the driver) you'll be fine.

I'm confused...

Shell Helix Diesel Ultra 5W-40
Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40
Shell Helix HX7 C 5W-40

All this oils are for diesels too.
And which one is OK for Pathfinder 2.5 Dci 126kW ?

Smarty,

I'd go with the Mobil 1 synthetic 5W-40.

I don't have the diesel manual here in the US to see what it says, but if either 5W-30 or 5W-40 is acceptable and it's not unusually cold wherever you are I stick with higher viscocity.

Helix is a good product too though...I don't think you could go wrong with "diesel ultra" if that's easier to get.

I do factory oil changes.... Only cause they offered a $400 package for lifetime changes on the vehicle. 4 changes a year.

Otherwise I've used Mobil 1, Syntec, Royal Purple in my old car with K&N oil filter.
I pushed it pretty hard on this combo with LONG periods between changes. (2001 grand am with 250K+ KM's.)
Engine's still strong, but tranny's starting to feel worn.

Peak 5w30 synthetic.

Good out to 6k between changes.
