Towing without a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Postby hfrez » Thu Oct 13, 2011 6:00 am

I just bought my PF and need to tow my 5900lbs 25ft Travel Trailer with it. The Pathfinder is one of very few V6 operated SUV's out there that will still tow above 5000lbs. All the Unibodies are rated at 5000lbs. I wanted to know though if towing my trailer with the AirLift 1000 airbags would be fine or if I would really need a Weight Distribution Hitch?
 Does anyone have any experience on this subject

See my PM, but I don't recommend it. WDH also goes a long way to help prevent sway.

You can do it. However the airlift is not a substitute for a WDH.

Thank you so much. I really apreciate your input. Experience out weigh's trial and error every time.

I pulled 5500lb cargo trailer from Arizona to Alaska with the standard hitch. Definitely a couple white knuckle moments. I'll get the WDH if I did it again.

I currently tow about 5k pounds with my 08/5.6L. I've towed with and without the WDH/Sway control. All I can say is spend the money and do it right, regardless of the weight. Specifically, I use the original "equal i zer" brand and it tows absolutely straight and the back end stays relatively level. I just bought the airbags and will add those just to stiffen things up a bit.

Just my 2 cents....

I tow a 4000 lb camping trailer. With my 2002 Pathfinder I needed a WDH to keep it from dropping down too much and for sway. The same trailer with my 2005 Pathfinder I find I don't need any WDH and really don't need my Airlift 1000 bags. It is perfectly level at only 3-6 lbs in the bags. When it is windy I do use a small sway bar control.
