2005 A/C electrical issue?

Postby martyf250 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 3:15 pm

A/C was working perfectly and then just stopped working. had it set on "max ac". both of the a/c and recirculating lights went off. the only setting the A/c would work on is when the fan is set to "1". if you move it to either 2,3,4 all lights go off and it does not work. Any ideas on what might be causing this?

Have you checked the pertinent fuses?

Transistor maybe. Maybe it's shutting off the compressor when you change the speed. Try to listen to hear if the compressor disengages when you change the speed setting.

Could be a battery on the way out - all sorts of strange signals get sent around the car wiring harness on my last Full Fat Range Rover, maybe the Pathfinder uses similar tech in places?

Try a hard reboot... unplug the battery for a while then reattach and see if its a voltage gremlin. Worth a shot.

Here's my dilema. I tried the hard reboot. that did not do anything. I went to Autozone and the resistor is $54. They said I could not retunr it because it is an electrical part.

When i unplugged the resistor (plug to the left of the blower under the dash, right?) the fan still worked on all 1,2,3,4 setting but the A/C lights still only worked on the 1 setting.

I just dont want to be out $54 if this is not the part. thoughts? confident it is the resistor?

I prefer that a tech familiar with this setup would reply, but I will offer my layman’s input, for the time being here are my thoughts…

I would “think” that IF the fan speeds DO change, that is speed up with each step on the speed selector, then the resistor has to be OK.

I suggest you take advantage of the online service manual found in the “STICKY” section of our forum: http://www.thenissanpath.com/viewforum. ... 9161ec6cd1 Go to Section MTC “Manual Air Conditioner”
There are several items that it may be. They show a number of diagnostic steps to use with a volt meter. A trip to the dealer may be in order instead of swapping parts without a proper diagnosis on your part. Hopefully someone can chime in here before such a trip.

yes, the fan speeds do change but the A/C shuts off at anything over speed setting 1.

According to the manual referred to above, it appears that the circuit goes thru a lot of different control modules, so it has to be traced as to where there is voltage and where it is missing. (Sometimes the voltage is to be “Zero”) Of course, some techs that have experienced the identical problem know exactly where to go. Engineers must keep themselves busy designing this stuff or they are out of a job. Oh, for the simpler days…

One thing I did notice is the IPDM module is involved. There were a lot of problems with some of the relays (contacts got corroded due to the way they were manufactured) in the early models. When their car quit, they would swap some of the relays to get going again. In fact, one of the relays was replaced under recall on mine before I had an issue. If that is the case, could the one for the AC also be suspect? Just thinking out loud.

SO i removed the resistor and played with the fan and ac. before I was getting fan on all speeds but just a/c on setting "1. After removal the fan just worked on setting 4. not sure what that might mean

got a replacement blower motor resistor and it did the trick!
