That is a good point on the fan. I had a fan lock up on my 2005 Pathy. These fans have hydraulic clutches that will sieze and the fan is always on which causes a huge drag on the engine.

The secret is premium fuel and gradual acceleration.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I can also take a picture of the on-board idiot computer mpg calculation that would look astounding as well. I don't buy that you are getting 29.7 mpg per tank though, if that is what you are claiming.

+1. I was just in Alberta, nobody drives less than 80MPH there. At those speeds, you would be lucky to get half of the 29.7MPG...

Funny pic.

Premium doesn't change my mpg at all, and from a scientific standpoint it shouldn't on these. Perhaps if you drove only with a heavy foot since it's the higher rpms where the premium could help. Of course driving with a heavy foot sort of goes against your 2nd piece of advice.

I'm happy with the mileage on mine sitting at an average of 18-19. If I hyper-mile I can improve about 1mpg. I have no time for that nonsense.

at 400km I usually put in about 60L of fuel. This equates to 15L/100km, or 15.6 US MPG.

The Truth

Postby Joe_Alberta » Fri Jan 17, 2014 1:03 am

Hi Guys,
Yes definitely I dream to get above 25MPG(us) on average mileage from my Pathfinder.

However, the 29MPG(us) image is real!
I was driving along a rural straight, flat road enjoying the views in a day with calm wind. The trick (the cheat) is I pressed the reset of the mileage trip computer and the reading I got was that.

I went and took a picture to what I'm really getting and it was 15mpg(US)
(OMG I did about 30,000 miles or 50,000km in 15 months)

Sorry guys but I tried to post some hope

Thanks for the replies and comments. I'm not 100% sure premium can improve mileage but gradual acceleration does. Keep engine rpm below 2000 and yes you'll get a better mileage :!: but will loose all the thrill.

No problem, we can all dream about having great mpg. Are you running 265/75/16 or equivalent sized tires? If not, you may want to figure out your mpg by hand-the speedo is tuned to that size tire, meaning any other size will have incorrect readings.

No it is the standard size tires that is written on the sticker at driver's door.

That'll mess with your onboard readings for sure. Go here: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos

Plug in 265/75/16 in the left column (in-car calculations are based on this size), then 245/75/16 in the right. It'll show you how off your readings will be.
