What this truck don't like...

Postby Gray » Sat Feb 23, 2008 5:41 pm

I had a few miles of ice roads to do recently and when I got on dry pavement forgot to put the truck back in 2wd. About 20 miles down the highway I started to hear this increasing hum from the front and after a couple of minutes and miles to figure it out it was getting pretty loud. When I pulled over to stop and change from 4x to 2x it came out with a hell of a clunk. Haha, won't be doing that again. :D

Grey, when you talking about 4x - you mean 4x Lock or Auto?

Makc

P.S. I know you talking not about 4x lock low :-)

Yeah Makc, that was in 4 Hi locked...I guess the Auto 4x has some applications but for ice and mud I like to be locked up. If I get a chance today I'll get some photos of why we use 4x4's in the Canadian north. :)

GB
This was a common problem with my Defender after being used with the centre diff locked, 'transmission wind up' seems to be the name for it over here. The way to cure it was to reverse in a straight line for 50yds or so to relieve the built up tension in the transmission. It seemed to do the trick without any nasty, exspensive sounding noises. :)

The manual states that a strong clunk is normal..

I was coming out of the mountains the other day, got on the freeway, and couldn't get over 60 mph...Pulled over, switched 4x4 on, then off, then reversed about 15 feet and heard it disengage, more of a loud click than clunk. After that, no probs. I will reverse now after disengaging like I had to do in my old Jeep.

I'm not sure what year your Pathys are but I know some 4x 05s had an issue with 4wd "Thunk/thuds" where a componant between front x-member and front diff bangs together. Drove me Bat-f-n-sheezy for a year before they finally figured it out. There is a TSB for it that calls for moving the Diff housing up so there is at least 13mm of clearence TSB NTB06-056...

Never been limited to 60mph in 4x tho, thats a good one.
Just my two cents, don't spend it all in one place.
