Is it necessary to check transfer case oil?

Postby The_Force » Mon Apr 02, 2012 1:48 am

I just bought a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD.

I was doing routine maintenance yesterday (Checking fluids) and was wondering, as a part of routine maintenance, if I should check the transfer case oil level.

If so, how do I go about doing this?

Yes that's something you should check. Most transfer cases have a drain plug and a fill plug. The fluid level should come up to the bottom of the fill plug. If you're note sure when all the fluids were last changed, it's a good idea to go ahead and change them all so you know everything is good.

Where is the transfer case/drain and fill plugs located? I can't seem to find it.
If you could supply a picture, that would be great, as I am a total idiot when it comes to anything mechanical

I won't be using 4WD for a while yet, as I need to get the CV boots replaced.

Drain plug will be on the bottom, front of the case, and the fill will be about halfway-up the back side of the case, assuming my memory isn't completely shot! It'll have a 1/2" square drive recess in the plug for removal. Put some RTV sealant on the threads before re-installing.

I didn't mean the location of the drain/fill plugs..I meant the location of the transfer case itself.\

I am such a noob when it comes to cars and the mechanics behind them
