What's wrong with my Pathy

Postby awmorris » Mon Apr 23, 2012 7:35 am

I have a 2006 LE with about 90k. On the way to take my kids to school last week the engine died. Rpms went to 0 and service engine soon light blinked twice. I pulled over and tried to start it and it fired up like nothing happened. It happened again about 2 miles up the road and I put it in neutral and started it back up. Got the kids to school and went to work about 10 miles away. At lunch, I went to the bank and was on my way back to the house when it died again. Tried to start it up and it wouldn't start. Was spuddering like it not was getting enough fuel. Called a local shop and had it towed there. They got a chance to look at it this morning and of course it fired right up. They said there were no codes logged. Told them it took awhile to act up. I haven't heard from them since then.

Has anybody seen this behavior?

Sounds like the ECM relay/IPDM issue.

Here is a related post:

You need to either replace your ECM relay:

Or the IPDM can be replaced, but these appear to be in short supply andkind of hard to find (at least i couldn't find any).

Just replace the relay and you should be fine. That's what I did when mine went out two years ago. I haven't had any other problems since. You're fortunate that Nissan now sells the relay separately.

If you want to know for sure that the ECM relay is bad just swap it with another relay such as the rear defroster or fog lights and see if that fixes your problem.

Good luck!

Thanks guys... I got the relay replaced at the dealer. I'm going to see if I can get reimbursed for the towing now.

I agree. This is poor design by Nissan. The failure of a relay should not cause the engine to shut off and without any warning. Fortunately I was just in a parking lot when my ECM relay went bad.

I'm tired of it all...Sick of the Pathfinder!
I have this same problem as mentioned above...92,000 miles...The car doesn't sit...Had the ECM relay recalled and replaced on Feb. 2011...New Fuel pump about 5 months ago...All of these things occur like the Original Poster...It has died while driving...it has done all of this...
I'm getting pretty fed up w/ this vehicle...After reading nearly a thousand posts over the weekend, I called the Nissan dealer today and said to check the IPDM...
They've had my Pathfinder for over a week...first they said it the BCM Body Control Module was bad...then said the Fuel Sending Unit was bad...Well, they all turned out fine...
So. . . They told me it's not the IPDM...
I feel like we are at a stand still . . . They do not have a clue what is wrong w/ my Pathfinder! ! ! ! ! ! ANYONE WANT MY JUNK!?!!?!??!

For someone who joined this forum for help I guess, you're pretty negative on your outlook of the truck, why don't you just take your nastiness and take it down the road or shove it where the good Lord split you. I understand you are having problems with your pathy but why do you want to take it out on our forum, take it out on the dealership that sold you the vehicle, if what you claim happened then they shouldn't have any problem fixing it or taking the car back, and if that doesn't work pursue legal action.
