20w30 in a 1995 Pathfinder?

Postby The_Force » Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:04 pm

I had asked my dad to stop at Auto zone to pick up some engine oil for my 1995 Nissan Pathfinder (Taking in tomorrow to have a brake job and CV boots changed, so decided to do an oil change as well).

So my dad calls me to ask what type of oil my Pathfinder takes, as the customer service rep told him my Pathfinder takes 20w30 oil. I knew that didn't sound right, so I checked the manual and the manual said 5w30.

Why would anyone recommend 20w30 oil? Would that oil ruin my oil pump/engine? Lastly, what conditions warrant the use of 20w30 oil?

Thanks for any answers that can be provided.

5W30 is the recommended oil. I don't know of any Nissan that calls for anything but 5W30 or 10W30.
